hey sorry about the discord ask. i was frustrated because i joined a really small fandom recently and i was posting a lot in the tag and working on the wiki and then i joined the discord and people in the discord had been talking about how i was posting into the void and should they tell me there was a discord. that combined with tumblr communities— it just kind of killed my excitement. i had a moment where i was upset because i feel like part of the reason tumblr doesn’t generate the same kind of fandom interaction anymore is because of communities and discord, and that’s fine. things change or move to other platforms, but in the moment, it was frustrating.
no i completelyyyy understand what you mean. it bothers me deeply that so much of fandom conversation has migrated to private discord servers these days, which is why i always try to post things i'm thinking about and headcanons and ideas on tumblr, even if the discussion originated in a discord space. i don't really "get" or enjoy the tumblr community update either. i wish there was more conversation outside of closed off, unseen spaces that more often than not will not be seen by most fans of a thing. not to mention the intimidating aspect of just up and joining a discord esp if you don't know anyone? and then half the time the discords i've joined ended up not being very fun or active (so like, what's the point of being here versus on tumblr) or had one million extremely specific rules that make talking in them not fun or easy at all! i hate that discord is considered a natural substitute or even full on replacement for tumblr and the way fandom communities used to be bc frankly they are entirely separate worlds. i totally get it. trust me.
