Hi! As someone who relates to a lot of your mental health stuff you post about, I just wonder how do you manage to have such positive presence? Most of the time I can`t help but get devoured by envy and hatred ofmy high functioning peers, I`m so bitter I can`t just be like them... I manage to keep up more or less decent facade in person but really I most often just feel hatred. The thing is I look up to how nice you are so maybe do you have any advice on managing those bad emotions better?
Thank you so much for this ask... knowing that there's someone out there who relates to the things I post makes me feel less lonely, more understood and the fact that you even look up to me in some way means the world!
I think feeling hatred and envy is very normal. I can't help feeling bad over other people's achievements, my mind's like "why not me?" and rightfully so. I don't turn it into toxic behavior, but the envy is there. Hatred and anger are difficult emotions to deal with... I understand how devouring it feels and how it pushes us on the verge of losing control.
It's not your fault, it's just human.
My sincere advice on how to deal with such feelings is self love, but wait, self love doesn't mean you should look at yourself in the mirror and claim you like your own face; it means admitting you're angry. It means crying about what frustrates you. It means validating your own feelings no matter how "ugly" or "mean" they would sound like to others. It means yelling at the world that they're leaving you behind because life's always fucking harder for you.
I used to be much more bitter than I am now. I couldn't stand seeing my peers get what I've always wanted, and so easily, too... I felt so lonely that I eventually accepted I'd spend time with myself only. Surprisingly, as soon as I started focusing on doing things I love, noticing something nice more often, or simply relaxing more frequently, the bitterness didn't really have much left to hold on to. Being bitter requires energy, but your energy could be used for some other purpose if you give it a chance, if you give *yourself* a chance. Even when you hit rock bottom, you're still powerful enough to look up and think the sky is pretty. There's literally no end to the chances you're able to give yourself.
Being nice won't come so easy if you're not nice to yourself first. In fact, I used to be an egotistical piece of shit when I didn't have a trace of self love in me. By slowly learning that there was sadness behind my anger, and a crying child hidden by my bitterness, I managed to embrace what I was feeling with more and more tenderness... When I discovered this new way of seeing my emotions, I began to apply it to the world, as well: the angry boss at work was nothing but a frustrated kid disguised as an adult. The friend who didn't give back the money I lent her probably had a difficult relationship with responsibilities. The random hater on the internet was most likely in need of feeling superior for a while because of a bad mood. When you see the world through the eyes of compassion and empathy, it can't get to you. The only catch is that this is something that needs to go through yourself first to work.
Some mental illnesses and personality disorders make it incredibly hard to do any of this, though; I'm not sure what you suffer from, but I'd suggest to take a look at the symptoms of it. If lacking empathy is there, I hope you keep it in mind and forgive yourself if it seems impossible for this to work. You don't have a shred of fault!
Sometimes I look back at my past self and I wish I was told the things that I'm able to tell others now. That's also a way to be nice, projecting onto others what you would've wanted to hear. I seriously doubt it can't be of use to somebody else. We may be different people with different lives and personalities, but our human needs couldn't be more identical.
You have no bad emotions, just your emotions. ❤️ And only you know what they're telling you. You deserve to be listened to, your hatred and envy do, too.
I'm not sure if this helps in any way, I answered as genuinely as I could. I'm just a person trying to be good, because being good is important to me, so please take my words as friendly advice and nothing else. I could be wrong with everything, but hey, that's what makes life interesting!
