Random politics nerdery question: How do write-ins work for ranked-voting systems? It seems to me that they will always lose unless they get a 50% majority, since I don’t see why anyone would write them in just to select them as their second or third choice.

I am particularly curious how this works for Borda Count.

Here's an interesting article on alternatives to majority voting systems, like Borda Count and Condorcet. Most involve ranking multiple options in some way, or else multiple rounds of voting on pairs of options. Supposedly they can result in more of a consensus result.
