This is THE famous chaconne from Bach’s second violin partita, only it’s been transcribed here for the organ, one of Bach’s most personal instruments. I’ve been in love with this work for years, whether it be for original solo violin, Brahms’ left hand etude, Busoni’s hyper romantic piano transcription, Stokowski’s orchestration...doesn’t matter. Bach can be played on anything. And this solemn piece, written in memory of his first wife Maria Barbara, contains his most passionate music. In the original partita, it takes up half of the entire suite, and in its original form, makes use of almost all of the violin’s technical abilities and range. And like his Passacaglia, it is a set of variations that are interwoven with such genius, it seems to effortlessly flow from the earth to the stars.
