what do you say? well, what could she say? all the words seemed taken from her, replaced with thousands of whirling thoughts. it was the natural course of pattern for them at this point, enough games and ‘will they/won’t they,’ time to commit to something. but did she see that kind of response coming? no. why couldn’t he just be the hook up kind of guy? because then he wouldn’t be steve. she doesn’t move from his grip, she just...relaxes, fingers toying with the collar of his shirt.

❛  you’re serious. ❜ it’s more of an observation than a question, dumbfounded by the idea of taking a leap. it’s true, the sex really was the easy part, but giving her heart away was terrifying. but why? hasn’t she known and loved him long enough? ❛  your ex-sidekick is alive, my boss wants you in handcuffs, and we meet in secret every night just to see each other. but you’re serious? ❜  a beat. ❛  god, i must be losing it too because i want to say yes. ❜

“  yes.  ”   the word is out of his mouth before he can even try to mask the fact that he’s so, so behind on his rent.   “  but it’s—it’s fine, i have it under control.  just need to, uh...  ”   he thinks about it for a second, and then sighs.   “  pick up a couple more assignments at the bugle.  during midterm season.  ”   the latter is spoken with a resigned tone.

yeah, yep, no one ever said being a superhero, on top of a journalist photographer and a full-time university student, would be easy.  he’s pretty sure he hasn’t slept since monday, and it’s already a friday?  yeah, it’s a friday.   “  god, i could really go for some coffee and a pizza right about now.  ”  except i’m behind on my rent and can’t keep spending money on food.

               THE COMMENT MADE her flinch because he was right. He was right: Becky had never done well with letting anyone else take care of her. Despite being the second-born, she had always tried to out-care Jimmy, out-care Steve, or convince everyone around her that she was alright. She wondered if the tone he’d used had meant that Steve was thinking of more than just now, more than just this time. 

If he was thinking of a couple of lifetimes ago, he’d have a laundry list of times she had been in trouble and simply wouldn’t let anyone help her. Her stubbornness and independence had made her a frighteningly-good nurse, because she never gave up and she’d learned how to do so many things herself that she became an asset wherever she was. But that same competence closed her off to asking for help, or accepting it when it was offered. 

She lived in a world surrounded by the exceptional now, and if she kept rebuffing someone like Steve from doing what he could, she was going to get hurt. 

                     But Barnes stubbornness was impossible to suppress. 

“You don’t have to worry about me,” she said instead of the million things she could have — should have — said. She pulled a small smile onto her lips and reached up ( up, up, up ) to rest her always-cold hand on his cheek. “When have you had to worry about me, hmm?” She didn’t want him to think about when they had been starving, or even when she’d been flung here — now — and had, for all intents and purposes, died. “More people than me need you to protect them; I can’t be selfish, okay?”

she’s never been the type to look back. once something is in the past, it’s in the past, simple as that. it brings too many memories forward, more bad than good and it reminds her of how different a person she once was. before the world left her bitter and jaded she wore a pair of rose colored lenses, bliss over ignorance. there was a point in time she was afraid to show him who she was –afraid to prove to him that she changed and maybe not for the better. but every once in a while, she’s reminded that she needn’t have worried. 

no, when steve looks back at their past, it’s not with longing. it’s reflective, perhaps with a tinge of hope for the future. she doesn’t say it enough ( not out loud at least ) but he astounds her. and just maybe she’s also getting sentimental at the mention, a tender smile pressed cleanly on her face. 

❛  i remember it too. ❜ truth is, she never forgot. ❛  first mission together –and if i remember correctly, i saved your star spangled hide, rogers. ❜ but for all her teasing, she knows that he’s saved her in more ways than one since then.
