A question within myself. What is the difference between Quilting and Sashiko? Toward #QuiltCon2020, I am spending as much time as possible learning the Quilting. ☆ Quilting and Sashiko have a lot of similarities. “How to enjoy fabric” is a universal language in between Quilting & Sashiko. One (possible) significant difference will be that quilters have a specific design as their blueprint. They have a destination when they start the project - very beautiful design and theme. They cut fabric nicely and beautifully, then stitch together. (Forgive me if my understanding of quilting is incorrect.) ☆ Sashiko also requires a process of cutting fabric, of course. However, including myself, many Sashiko artisans prefer, “Not-cutting-the-fabric” process. If there is a choice, I prefer using the fabric as is. Some of the Boro we make, we try to use the fabric as is - with less cutting the fabric. It is difficult to explain logically, it is more like a feeling. Again, it is not about good or bad. The quilting I find is so beautiful, and I will enjoy the Quiltcon. “Boro (襤褸)” in Japanese has several meanings. It can be a used & worn piece of fabric, as you know. Boro can mean “Horse droppings”, and it can be Onomatopoeia. Each meaning has a sense of “dirty” and “poor”. Some of the Sashiko artisans I knew never wanted to touch “Boro”.  ☆ It is so interesting to see how people (we) change the value. Once the word meant a “poop” or “useless material”, now we all find the “beauty” in it. I personally appreciate those Art-Dealers who re-define the beauty of Boro. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have started learning it more.  ☆ Among my acceptance in those changes, there is one thing I do not want to change. It is a “role” of the material (or the word) based on its history. For me, it is okay to see the change in value. “It” can be valuable or complete-waste by looking at “it” from a different angle. However, the role should be respected since it will preserve the culture - which is the stories behind the material/word. I believe, only the people who understand the previous role can change (develop) the next role - otherwise, a culture can be easily over-written by loud voices. ☆ Boro is not a verb. Boro is not a technique. The “patchwork with whatever recyclable” would not carry the spirit of Boro. If you are confused or agitated by my words, please try to learn. The word “Boro (襤褸）” is often misinterpreted (mis-translated) in English. I share many stories about Boro here and there. One critical message is that “Boro” never becomes a verb in Japanese.  ☆ Not so long ago, dealers redefined the value of Boro. Today, “Boro” became a very expensive piece of fabric. It is natural to have super expensive pricing on it since it requires unbelievable hours of stitching to make a good Boro. Boro isn’t just patchwork with recycled fabric. It is a result of repetitive Sashiko in necessity - I call it layers of caring (& shame).  ☆ Therefore, many say it is impossible to make an authentic Boro. I agree. Therefore, many “display” Boro instead of wearing because it is incredibly challenging to fix. Ideally speaking, Boro should be “used”, like we do not enjoy a delicious miso-soup by just looking at it, you gotta eat (wear) it to experience the truth. ☆ In order to tell this message, my mother and I have this Boro Jacket as a social experiment - to see if we can create the authentic Boro & share what it is like to “wear” Boro. I always encourage my friends to wear it. Many feel “it (something words cannot describe well)”. Outside, we intend to keep the “mono-tone” as if it is one sheet of fabric. Inside, numbers of patches to keep it as wearable. (Second photo is the inside as I often share). Boro is not a technique. FEATURE: Retro Sashiko Handstitched Patchwork Boro jacket with antique Japanese Tsutsugaki, Zanshi woven, Katazome fabric. Recently finished this wonderful jacket, all patches are done by handstitching by myself. It took about four days to complete this. In the front, it is inspired by traditional Japanese Boro Indigo textile, I tried to do the most authentic look that I can with a modern twist, and with a nice mix of blue indigo & brown colour tone. By giving it more authentic look, I added a few antique fabric that I found on my trip to Kyoto, Japan this Winter. The patches has the combination of Katazome, Zanshi woven and Tsutsugaki fabric. The backside I used this wonderful wing design Tsutsugaki fabric along with other patches, which it gives a warm traditional feeling to it.
