While they were still pretty much strangers… maybe acquaintances, he’d heard that it was his uncle’s birthday. He didn’t know too much about him, but he seemed like a cool guy. And his mom really loved him… and he was named after this guy.
So Boruto thought it would be cool to give his uncle a necklace of his own, with his own screw attached to it as well. He didn’t seem like much of a necklace guy, but it was the thought that counts, right?
He’d scribbled ‘Happy Birthday Uncle’ on a napkin before leaving the back in front of his uncle’s room. Delivering it in person would be awkward.
The item on his door made Neji blink once before he spotted the somewhat messy message on...a napkin? Taking them gingerly, he rolled the screw between his fingers as he read the message twice over to make sure he wasn’t misreading the kanji.
Uncle Neji. He could guess which one this was from, and after a moment, he slipped the necklace on, letting the screw fall beneath his shirt.

Neji can’t deny quiet, boring things because less so with Boruto in the mix. He only enjoys it privately, however.

Probably briefly, paired with a hair tousle because Neji is not an emotionally available human being. If he actually starts a hug however, no matter how short, he really means it.

Not much honestly, Neji tends to be more or less the same outwardly with people he likes and dislikes, granted he’s a little less forced with friends and people he actually doesn’t hate. All that changes his reason, his dryness become teasing, and his admittedly limited patience gets a small boost.

Not because he wants Boruto to remain as he is (a little more maturity wouldn’t kill him), but because he wants to make sure how he and Hinata were raised, even outside their home, is over. And he knows how important a childhood is, and that it shouldn’t be rushed out of.
