Adonis: Europe’s oldest tree
A seedling during the peak of the Byzantine empire, and when Vikings reached the shores of the Black Sea in year 941. 100 years old when gunpowder is first described, and when Macbeth is crowned the King of Scotland. 250 years old when the universities of Oxford and Paris were founded, 500 years old when Greece is conquered by the Ottoman Empire, 750 years old when Isaac Newton formulated his Laws of Motion, and 1000 years old during the throes of World War II. A Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii) has endured for over 1075 years (as determined by dendrochronological dating), in the relatively inhospitable yet civilised highlands around the Pindos mountains, Greece.
The tree, called Adonis after the Greek god of beauty and desire, stands among several other individuals of a similar age, and was sought out by scientists to provide a picture of climatic and environmental history. The forest in which Adonis stands is virtually untouched by damaging human hands, which is impressive given the scope of civilisation and history that has surrounded the area - including the rise and fall of entire empires.
Though Adonis may be old by human standards, it is still a few thousand years younger than a certain bristlecone pine in the Californian White Mountains, which holds the record for being over 5,000 years old.
