Meeting & Dinner With Chandler Massey + Days Event
*Huge thanks to @johnnykrtz and @laurad1968 for being my 2nd and 3rd pair of eyes in helping me edit the recap*
The day arrived. I was meeting Chandler Massey and the men from Days of Our Lives. I was totally wired, even though I had maybe five hours of sleep. Upon getting dressed, I decided to check my phone for messages, and lo’ and behold! Chandler had texted me with “Hey, Heather, it’s Chandler. Are you awake?” I am not joking in the least. It was the cutest thing ever because I knew it was him. He had called him earlier in the week to make tentative plans for the weekend, and basically the texts were to make concrete plans. He told me he had gotten to the hotel late, after 10pm Friday night. There were two options: he was available to eat and chat and wanted to know if either would work for me. It was my choice, so dinner at 5:30 was settled. “See you soon.” That was the end of conversation. Yes, I still have the text messages on my phone..lol.
11:45am came, and my descent down to the ballroom for the first event began. Susen gave me her motto, “No fear,” and if you have already seen my pictures, you know I took that motto and ran with it. LOL. I bought the full package for all three events. First up was the brunch/photo-shoot. Once in the ballroom, opening seating was at round tables overlooking the gorgeous view of the Boston Harbor. In front of the window, a stage with a couch and camera lighting was set up for our group photo with the guys. Before they arrived, everyone mingled a little bit, getting food and bidding on autographed items. Chandler was the first to enter the room, and he sat at a table and conversed for a little. A couple of times, I happened to look up and noticed he looked like he was looking for someone. I thought maybe it was me. At this point, I was too nervous to walk up and introduce myself. When I finally found some courage and started to get up, the other guys arrived, and the event began, so I sat back down. Now, all of them were onstage with Chandler, and again he was scanning the room. Then, all of a sudden, his eyes landed on me, and he pointed at me and mouthed “Heather.” I smiled, nodded yes and waved. He did the same.
The photo-shoot got underway. Each of us were given a number and five at a time were called to stand in line. One by one each lady and gentleman’s picture was taken with two poses. They could be different, if desired. We could choose who we wanted to sit next to us on the couch. While this was being done, 50 people sat staring at you.
When my number 31 was called, I stood in line for my turn. The announcer and I talked how nervous I looked, and he told me not to nervous. Funny thing, I wasn’t all that nervous, but apparently my facial expressions said otherwise. Go figure. My turn finally arrived, and I will admit having all six guys look at you walking up onstage was intimidating. I got up there and stood next to Greg, and it was either Shawn or him that said, “Who do you want?” The exact sentence that came out of my mouth was, “I would like Chandler and Greg on the couch.” It just came out that way. Of course, the wording didn’t register until the guys started commenting and teasing me. Greg said, “You are into some kinky things,” which made me want to crawl into a hole and hide.
Chandler sat on my left, and Greg on my right. Each hand ended up on Chandler’s and Greg’s leg for the picture. Once it was done, Chandler said to me,“I’ll see you tonight.” He gave me a hug after I asked. Then I got a hug from Greg, thanking me for coming. I returned to my seat, and the rest of the photos were taken. Some woman got brave and asked three of the guys to sit on the couch while she laid across them. In another memorable moment, poor Greg was smacked in the face accidentally when one lady sort of heaved herself onto them at the exact moment Greg was looking down.
Here is the finish picture
Photos finished 30 minutes early, so we were allowed to mingle the room, asking for personal photos and autographs from each of the guys. No set structure Just pick actor, stand in the formed line, and wait patiently. Eric was first, then Chandler. We talked a little bit, and expressed how we were looking forward to dinner; he said he was very happy our dinner plans were set. With the event schedule, he was worried there wasn’t going to be enough time to do the lunch or dinner, but everything worked out in the end.
The pictures followed. Once he put his arm around my back/waist, I just placed my hand on his chest. There really wasn’t any thinking involved. I just did it. Now if you meet me, the first thing you will notice is I’m very quiet. Also I have self-control, so for me to casually touch Chandler’s pec took a great deal of confidence. To be honest, I’m not really sure what got into me. Two pictures were taken because of the apparent bad lighting on the first one.
Time was running out. My final stop was to Greg, such a sweetie and gentleman. He thanked me for coming. I asked him for his autograph. He sat down to write it, and I got a picture with him. When I’m standing next to him, you can definitely see how pale I am..lol. I told him I loved the movie with Alison and him, to which he responded, “Thank you so much.” We talked a little Cowboys football since I told him that was my mother’s favorite team. There were times throughout the night where I would pass Greg, and he would always stop, put his hand on my arm, and say, “Hi.” The session had ended. The fans chilled for a bit outside the ballroom until the Q&A session and role play came up.
Ashley was also a part of the Q/A and role play session. She created a great recap so with her permission here is hers.
*************************************
First they did the role play, where a few fans go up and perform skits with selected actors. They were HILARIOUS (I'll go by character names now, since they were all in character):
The first skit was Salem being under attack and Eric Brady just runs out of the room LOL Then Daniel says that he's a doctor and he can save us all LOL
The next skit was EJ in a bar and Will was coming to tell him something important. So Will tells EJ that Rafe has been looking at him weird LOL (every skit involving Will or Rafe after that, they'd mention how Rafe likes Will!) So Rafe starts giving Will looks and says he needs help with his car outside. So Will goes, "Is it a stick shift?" LOL And Rafe replies, "It's manual." LOL
Another skit was a fan being a doctor and Will was hurt. So EJ and Rafe carry Will over and drop him on the chairs and say he hit his head and he's unconscious and the fan has to revive him! The fan asked what happened to him and Rafe said he got hit in the head and then Will magically wakes up and says that it happened at Rafe's apartment LOL Then they told the fan to give him mouth-to-mouth to save him (and she was older so obviously she wasn't going to even try lol) so then Daniel goes, "You're doing it wrong!" and shows her how and pretends to do it to her LOL Then, I have no idea how it got to this, but Brady says that they'll make Will a pinata. And he goes, "We're gonna smack Will's @$$ until candy comes out! Or Sonny's, whichever comes first." LOL I WAS DYING.
Another skit was EJami's wedding. So the fan was Sami and Brady was giving her away, and Will says to EJ, "I'll give you away!" LOL So then Father Eric is marrying them and all of a sudden Rafe throws a Frisbee at them LOL Then one of the workers in the back accidentally broke a ton of glasses and they all jumped and Brady goes, "KRISTEN!" LOL (Eric Martsolf is HILARIOUS!) But then Rafe comes in and goes, "Has anyone seen my Frisbee?!" LOL And then he goes, "Hi, Will! My police cruiser broke down..." He kept saying he wanted Will's help with his cruiser LOL Then Rafe has a magazine with Alison Sweeney on the cover and he asks the fan who is pretending to be Sami to sign it LOL So then Rafe goes off with Will and Rafe goes, "I got your mom's autograph!" LOL
Another skit was all 6 of them walking through the park and see a girl crying and the only way to help her is to sing to her. So Daniel is sitting on a "bench" and he suddenly says that Rafe just stepped on a pigeon! So Rafe picks up the pigeon and lets it fly away and then Will pretends to shoot it LOL So then they see the fan who is the girl crying and Brady starts singing a song and then puts his mic to Chandler, but Chandler didn't know the song! Then the five of them start singing it and like everyone in the room was singing it! I didn't know the song either! lol I think me and Chandler were the only ones who didn't know it LOL
Another skit was Brady and EJ going at it and they were trying to decide which family is better, the Blacks or the DiMeras. So they decide this with Rock, Paper Scissors. They do best two out of three and Brady won. Rafe goes, "Do two out of three!" because he wasn't paying attention and didn't realize that was what they did. So then he goes, "Best three out of five!" and Brady says, "He's in a coma!" Every time Galen said something dumb they'd say he's in a coma LOL So then Brady and EJ thumb wrestle and EJ won. LOL Then Brady said they should duel and Shawn goes, "A D-O-O-L, duel." LOL
For the last skit, about 15 fans went up and it was Brady performing Shakespeare in the park because he's not doing well financially. So someone tells him that they were doing Shakespeare at the Boston Common and he acts confused because he's in Salem LOL Then he wondered why thee were so many people gathered around him and there was previously a skit where Daniel said Brady had a rash (and that was put into a few other skits as well) and so Chandler goes, "They all got your rash." LOL Then a fan asks if he has a permit for this and he goes, "Who are you Hope?!" and then goes, "How's Bo doing?!" LOL
(Back to real names) After the role play, they started the Q&A. Lots of good and random questions were asked. Galen said at one point that today was his sons's birthday and Shawn suggested that we all sing Happy Birthday to his son! So Galen took a video of all of us singing Happy Birthday! lol Then he sent it to his son and his son sent us a video back saying thank you <3 Galen also sent Alison Sweeney a video of all of us chanting, "Sweeney! Sweeney!" and she later tweeted it and loved it! Someone else asked if their wives/girlfriends ever get mad when they have to get intimate with another woman on the show and Chandler looks like, "Not me." LOL Then someone told Chandler that he'll be missed when he leaves and he thanked them. Greg goes, "You're leaving??" like he didn't know. LOL They asked what he thinks they should do with the character and he said they should recast Will because he wants to see the WilSon storyline continue <3 Then one of them goes, "Let him spread his wings." and Chandler goes, "Caw caw!" and starts flapping his arms LOL And Shawn says, "Now he improvises!" LOL Another question was about spoilers and Eric goes, "Did Abby die in the pub yet?" LOL Then Chandler heads to the restroom again with James and eventually they come back and Chandler sits down with pills and water and the guys are like Wth? LOL Eric was like, "You're supposed to take your amphetamines in the bathroom!" LOL And Shawn goes, "That's why he's leaving the show!" LOL Someone also asked Chandler why Gabi never takes care of Little AG and Chandler acted like he was just realizing this LOL Another question was what the best advice they've ever gotten was. I don't remember all of their answers but Greg says, "Don't f*ck up your credit." LOL Chandler said his was "Go to college." and Shawn said his was "Go to hell." LOL Another question was about Brady's drug addiction storyline and Eric said it was interesting because they never specified the drug Brady was using. And he literally asked the show and they said they had no time to specify because it's a fast-paced show. So Eric said it's about speed... maybe literally about speed. LOL Then someone told them to say a tongue twister: say "Unique" and they each said it. Then say "New York" and they each said it. Then say "Unique New York" three times, so they all started saying it at once LOL She told them to each say it individually, so they all tried and failed. lol Then she said another one is saying "Toy Boat" three times. When it got to Shawn, he started saying "Motorboat Motorboat Motorboat" until someone told him it's "Toy Boat." LOL At one point, and I have no idea why this topic came up, but Galen started talking about how healthy Chandler eats. And he said Chandler will be eating kale on set and he'll be all, "I'm totally hallucinating from this kale!" LOL And Chandler goes, "It's true!" Then at one point they all started talking about Gabi and Eric is like, "She blew up the whole town." LOL And Galen goes, "What?" and Eric goes, "Your sister killed my fiance!" Then Chandler chimes in and says how she killed Jack Deveraux LOL
They also each kept drawing raffle tickets and reading off the numbers, and at one point Chandler is doing it but he didn't read the numbers right or something. lol So the next time he picks one, he reads it off and James starts helping him and holding his fingers up to help him read the numbers LOL It was cute how genuinely happy Chandler looked for every winner. <3 Then Eric read off a raffle ticket and said, "Your prize is 15 broken glasses!" referring to all the glasses in the back that broke. LOL
Some tidbits I remember from the Q/A, the organizers were very adamant about no video cameras. Cameras were going to taken if they caught anyone. I was asked three different times during the Q/A session if I was recording any of it and I really wasn't.
No one directly asked Chandler if he was leaving or not. The people at the event really kind of assumed because in casual conversation they would wish him good luck and he would say thank you. Didn't confirm or deny.
James likes to travel. Eric made a funny remark about him visiting many interesting places but doesn't share them like on Twitter.
Someone asked about music: Greg mentioned country, Chandler mentioned folk, Galen mentioned Jay-z and Jane's addiction. All the guys had a wide range of who they listen to.
After the role play / Q&A session, it was time for my dinner with Chandler. Here’s a little backstory for anyone wondering how I got to eat dinner with him. I pledged for the lunch incentive with Casey and Chandler on their Kickstarter 65 Roses project. I had messaged him before to see if the lunch could be done in Boston since I was already going to see him there. He said, “Definitely,” but Casey couldn’t come and asked if that was all right. It sucked Casey couldn’t come, but I told him I was okay with that.
I waited for him outside the ballroom doors and when he finished talking, he came to find me. He asked if I was hungry, and I replied with “I’m starving.” He was as well. Neither of us had eaten much prior. While descending the staircase, he apologized for not having a car to go somewhere so we ate at the hotel restaurant, the Hyatt Harborside Grill. He had me choose inside or outside, to which I choose outside.
Once outside, he asked me to choose where we would sit. I mentioned trying to find a table where the sun wasn’t directly in our faces. It proved too difficult, so Chandler walked over to a table and says, “Let’s do this.” Being a gentleman, he took a chair and moved it so I would not be facing the sun. Once we each took our seats, glasses of water were given to us. The waitress gave us a few minutes to browse the drink selection and menu. Chandler was unable to drink or eat anything sweet, and I’ll tell you why later, and I ended up opting out of an alcoholic drink to start. When he can, he’s a beer guy.
Looking over the menu which all sounded delicious, the seared Atlantic Salmon caught my attention. It came with kale and since Chandler had eaten it before, I asked him how it tasted. It sounded interesting, and hey, something new to try. Upon telling him what I was going to get after he asked me, he had his narrowed to chicken or Salmon as well. Ultimately, we ordered the same thing- the Seared Atlantic Salmon with miso glaze, harvest grains, spinach, and kale. Chandler opted for no glaze.
Once that was done, we resumed our conversation. I will say first- time jitters were there, like for instance, while we were talking, I subconsciously started unrolling the silverware then commented with, “I have no clue why I’m unrolling this.” He laughed cutely, and commented which put me at ease. Nerves soon went away. He is really easy to talk to, very engaging. He looks you in the eye as he talks to you and is very well spoken. A great conversationalist. He asked me the first question. Our topics of conversations were broad from fun, silly, random questions to more serious questions such as asking my advice on a situation. Questions rattled off back and forth.
First off, he wanted to know about me-where I was from, what I did for a living. I explained how my attending this event was part of my graduation gift, so he then wanted to where I went and my focus of study. He was curious about my prescription. Being a medical assistant, my mind went to medication, and I had a puzzled face. He said “Your glasses”, and of course, it made sense after that. Since I couldn’t remember, I explained my eyesight is terrible and how I have no vision from my right eye. We discussed lasik surgery. Driving at night is one instance where Chandler wears his glasses regularly. He also liked one of the rings on my finger. It was an emerald.
I’ll give you a taste of the questions asked, and I know you don’t want to know about me so I tried to keep the comments related to what he said. These questions are not in the order they were asked.
He noticed I went to the set visit of Addicts Anonymous, which he would have liked to visit and see some of the project. We talked about my experience, he asked me how it was meeting Freddie, and how I enjoyed my first trip to LA. He told me even after living in LA for four years, he still hasn’t quite adjusted. I told him even though LA was my first trip to the West coast, it wasn’t my first out West. I went to Vegas four years ago, and he told me he hadn’t been back to Vegas since turning 21.
I received a question from a couple of people wanting me to ask Chandler if Freddie had said, “Babe” yet. Later on, when we talked about the show a little bit, I asked. I started out by explaining a little bit of the back story, how Susen (he remembered her last name) had a conversation at dinner with Freddie where she told him some fans would like more affectionate words said and how Freddie said he would throw in a “Babe.” When I asked if Chandler remembered it being said, he said he didn’t think so, not that he could remember. He reiterated what Freddie said- the “Dude” and “Man” are all scripted. Then fast forward to five days later, I’m listening to Freddie’s radio interview saying Will called Sonny “My Love” today. I thought that was so cool because Chandler himself didn’t give any indication he would say anything.
The story behind no sweets started when a challenge was set up between his five roommates and him of no sweets for one month that began on August 1. If anyone succumbed to the bet, he would have to give up his number one draft in his fantasy football league. For him, it’s Adrian Peterson. Since Chandler was the house winner last year, he was going to do his hardest to abide by it.
He asked me if I played Fantasy football and replied no, but that I loved football. His face lit up. We talked teams we root for; his is Atlanta Falcons. He also liked my team the Colts and our young quarterback, so we conversed some of that topic. He gave me his opinions surrounding the departure of Peyton Manning from the team last year plus the Manning vs Brady debate. Both of which we had similar views. A few teams he is not a fan of are the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49rs or Patriots. The Jacksonville Jags would be his pick to win the Super Bowl because they are such a long shot that if he put money down, he’d win big..lol. We conversed a while on this subject. When it comes to pro basketball, he cheers on the LA Clippers.
The more we talked, the more we learned we more we had in common. Our favorite Disney movies are Lion King and Beauty and the Beast plus Fox and the Hound. Those first two are his top tier with Little Mermaid, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Robin Hood in his second tier. Something both of us like to do sometimes is eat cereal, and sometimes for him with 2% milk as a late night snack. There are not many cereals we don’t like. Some of his favorite cereals he named were Lucky Charms, Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds, Crunch Berries, and Reese Pieces.
Music came into the conversation. Folk music was one style he mentioned during the Q&A when asked, and I got a big “Yes!” from him when I mentioned 90’s music. Doing karaoke came up, and I told him I might be an 80’s or 90’s song. He taught himself to play the guitar and piano, and recently for the piano he sought an instructor because he felt like he learned all he could on his own. He asked if I played, and he called me “multi-talented” when I said the flute and saxophone. We then talked about the 65 Roses project. The music video will shoot on August 21. The heavy metal music is more Casey’s kind of music. The cause of helping find a cure for cystic fibrosis was a major influence in joining the band for Chandler.
There was a moment during dinner when out of nowhere we heard loud, vibrating music. I turn around to see it coming from a boat floating along the harbor and commented on how it might the wedding party I rode down with on the elevator. The conversation shifted a bit to marriage. He shared his viewpoints for himself- way in the future.
I experienced a fan encounter with Chandler. During our conversation, a lady came up to our table, apologized for interrupting us, and asked if he was the actor that played Will from Days of Our Lives, Chandler Massey. He said, “Yes.” She told him she was longtime soap watcher and enjoyed watching him on Days and wished him good luck on the future. She apparently thought it was a date cause after the handshakes she said, “I’ll let you get back to your date.” Uh, no not a date.
A little while after he finished eating, the sun was really obstructing his view. Poor guy kept putting his hand on his forehead, or a couple of times he put a napkin on his head trying to keep the sun out of eyes so he could see me when he talked to me. “You can move your chair and next to me,” I suggested, and he replied with “You know what, I’ll do just that.” He moved to my right side and that is how we sat for the remainder of the dinner. He finished eating before me. I even made a comment along the lines of "Good lord, I'm still eating". He said, "Take all the time you need. Eating slowly is better for you."
I can’t quite remember how it came about my telling him this. It might have been when he was talking about getting into shape or something. His reaction when I told him he was gorgeous was “A lot of plastic surgery needs done up here.” He still doesn’t know his own hotness. Boy is big goof.
He asked if I liked to travel. I do, and he is the same way. We had the same opinion whether we would rather go on a hike or lay on the beach. Then we bonded over being pale/ light–complected people who burn easily and prefer the less humid weather for the better. I told him I would bust out my SPF 80 when needed, which I was totally not kidding. For its small town, ‘homey’ feel, Wilmington, North Carolina is a place he would like to live if he wasn’t living in LA.
TV shows he enjoys watching are Games of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Community, New Girl, and The Office, although not as much as seasons past. He asked what I like to do for fun. One thing he likes to do is watch and play golf, which took him a while to get into, but he enjoys it now. He also mentioned water skiing.
When it came to food, he recommended I try Apple Butter. He likes to make a sandwich with bananas and apple butter. A question I don’t think I’ve ever gotten is do you eat red meat? My answer was not a whole much anymore. He told me he had a feeling; he could tell. Then I told him For dessert, I ordered a molten lava cake. Chandler was going to live vicariously through me since he wasn’t able to eat it.
We lost track of time because the event for the VIP portion of the next event had already started and had been going on for a bit. One of the ladies in charge of the event came to get Chandler. I asked for a couple of pictures, and he graciously obliged with “Anything for my football buddy.” I stood to move my chair closer, sat back down, leaned in, placed my hand on my leg; mostly for balance. He placed his around my waist, and the picture was complete. The second photo was us standing next to one another with both our arms around each other’s waist. He paid for the bill, and we exchanged thank yous and see you laters, then he went to freshen up for the next event.
The final event was Dinner/Karaoke. Each of the guys entered with a lady on his arm, with Shawn and Chandler bringing up the rear. They entered together. I sat at what was dubbed the “Cool kids table” with the ladies I met early in the day- Mary, Lizzy, Claudia, and Pam. First, it was Lizzy’s job to ask Chandler to sit at our table. Then somehow, it became my job. I said only if someone comes up with me, and Mary accepted. She asked him, and he accepted. On his way back, he was stopped by one table, and they must have asked him to sit at their table because I heard him say, “They asked me first.”
Once seated, he conversed with the ladies at my table about theater and Broadway shows, which he expressed interest in doing someday, also studying abroad. He was offered Schmackery cookies but declined because of the bet. The red velvet on was absolutely delicious. He agreed to do a v-blog with Mary. During the interview, the tablecloth became more colorful when the wine Chandler was holding spilled a little. Funny thing, it wasn’t the first spill of the night. Prior, I had knocked over my water glass, and by the end of the nigh, some of Shawn’s champagne was added also.
Chandler told the ladies from NYC that he would be in NYC in September for a segment on the Today show, and we now know when and what for, and that he could have a cookie then. Chandler’s seeing a Broadway show with them also came up in conversation. They each had their picture taken with him and received an autograph. Then he started making his rounds to every table to sit down and chat. Throughout the night, he came back to our table for chit chats and apparently people took notice. We had people telling us, “We noticed Chandler kept coming back to your table.”
Our group mingled and got autographs and/or pictures from the other remaining stars. There was karaoke going on. Some of the stars- Greg, Eric, and Shawn-did sing songs with fans. Chandler was asked to karaoke, and someone even requested all the actors to sing with her. When it was time, his name was being called on the microphone to come forward, but he hid behind a couple of ladies. A wide variety of music played, 80’s, some country, a Grease song, hip-hop, dance line music. There was also an open bar for anyone, which I took advantage of as did the other actors.
At our last chat of the evening, I had Chandler sign my WilSon 4Ever book, and for those of you who have one, you will know what I’m talking about. On the WilSon kiss on the inside flap, he wrote, “Hot” in my book above my message...lol. Everyone’s last photos were taken, including my hug picture, where I had to stand on my tip toes to get my arms around his neck. Then our group wanted a picture together, and he was happy to take it for us. During our final hugs and goodbyes, he told me, “I will see you in December.” During dinner, I told him I would be Susen’s plus one at her dinner with him and others in December.
The next day, I descended the staircase to meet up with the girls in the lobby, and all of a sudden, two of them ran toward me saying, “He overslept and missed his flight.” I look to see who they are talking about, and it was Chandler standing in the middle of the lobby, talking. He did have an early flight that morning, and he stayed till the event ended which was midnight. Greetings and goodbyes were exchanged. He was going to watch golf, America’s favorite pass time, according to him. His flight was scheduled for later that day. Our group headed out of the hotel.
Some of my pictures I posted
