The discovery led to a new book, 'An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts', full of images that Georgiev describes as irresistible. 'The belle angevine pear [left] makes my heart sing and I’m partial to a plum named tragedy.' She’s also proud that the book showcases women working in science: 'Nine of this US department’s 21 artists were women. A rare thing at the time.' Most of all she’d like readers to think about biodiversity. We have to admit, it's a big thrill to see Atelier Éditions' drop-dead gorgeous, straight-up fascinating 'An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts: The U.S. Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection' featured by legendary food writer Florence Fabricant in the @nytimes Food section.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Fabricant writes, "That the U.S. Department of Agriculture and art could be on speaking terms seems astonishing. Yet from 1886 to 1942 the agency commissioned artists to document fruits and nuts grown in the United States, to record the varieties and help with identification at a time when the use of color photography was not widespread. The beautiful new book exhibits but a fraction of the 7,584 botanical watercolor paintings in the collection.
