Noah was born a healthy weight & is gaining well.
Born 14 Nov = 8 pounds 12 ounces
20 Nov = 9 pounds
26 Nov = 9 pounds 10 ounces
3 Dec = 10 pounds 3 ounces
17 Dec = 11 pounds 6 ounces
He’s averaging a 9 to 10 ounce weekly gain so I’m estimating that by his next weigh in on 31 Dec, he’ll be 12 pounds 9 ounces - we’ll have to wait & see.
Week 1 = exclusively breast fed (BF)
Week 2, 3 + 4 = BF + 1 day he had 3 ounces of formula
Week 5 = BF + 2 nights he had 4 ounces of formula
He is following the 75th percentile line meaning he is 75 times bigger than the average newborn but still within the healthy range. He is a chunky monkey :)
He is 6 weeks on Boxing Day but I plan to continue with the bottle of formula at 2am as it seems to help him through the night. He has breast whilst the bottle warms, then drinks 2 ounces. Then sleeps 2 hours before finishing the last 2 ounces & continues with breast if still hungry, then sleeps another 2 hours. Otherwise he is up every hour & I was so shattered the next day I worried I’d fall asleep holding him.
I wanted to exclusively breastfeed but my husband was worried about my health and encouraged formula & it has helped. I still mainly breast feed so he is still getting the benefits. At first I felt guilty like I’d failed & wasn’t providing the best for my son but at the end of the day you have to do what works best for you & he’s so hungry. There have been occasions where he has fed for 12 hours. The health professionals call it a growth spurt & are happy so long as he’s making dirty nappies, gaining weight & is alert - he is very healthy.
