i get sad when i think about the fact that amy marchs words: i want to be great or nothing was published in 1868 when hilma af klint was alive and who i imagine probably resolved the same thing herself. in a notebook she wrote: inside me surges such a power that i must move forward — and just the fierceness and courage this woman had is astounding, producing painting after painting in the most wonderful colours and symbols and meanings (pre-dating abstract art itself!!!). i mean not to get sentimental but i think amy would have been proud, hilma was nothing but great.

In this past TBL episode did Red seem off you you, physically? Particularly when he was on the plane, he seemed unwell (tired, maybe a bit out of breath?). Perhaps I'm reading into it or seeing something that wasn't there, but I wonder if he's going to begin having side effects from the new medication.

Your guess is as good as mine, anon, but yes, he did seem a bit “off” in that plane scene to me, as well. Mixing alcohol w/ pills is generally not the best idea (unless he keeps apple juice in that whisky bottle but I doubt it) and “secret illness” storylines always have a breaking point where the character can no longer hide whatever is wrong with them and a loved one catches on to kick the angst into high gear (Samar and Aram intro’ed this for us really well), so Red slowly developing side effects to the treatment and Liz noticing sth is wrong could be a nice way to go (”nice” story-wise, otherwise it’s a knife to the chest).

Liz’s first line in this ep is the (rhetoric) question of “Why is it that men think the only way to handle a problem is to be stoic?” and expresses concern that Aram “is gonna implode” bc he shut down. Aram is Red’s foil in several ways, one of which is his ability to freely, openly emote and talk about things - all of which he ends up doing in this episode when he bounces back from the initial shock of Samar’s decision and thus avoids any implosion. He talks it out w/ Red who not only helps him but also Samar by pointing out the double-edged nature of the power Aram holds in their relationship and the dangers of not being mindful of it: “You are more powerful than you know, Aram. Use it wisely.” This brings Liz’s power over Red to mind and lo and behold, we also get to see her finally trying to use it more wisely after the near-execution.

And I bet it’s not a coincidence that Liz’s remarks arrive seconds after we see Red inject himself and pop pills in secret - they are more about Red than Aram, a harbinger of sorts. In fact, the whole “I’m enduring things in silence and solitude” thing is quintessential Red, and knowing what’s coming (his paranoid obsession w/ who betrayed him flaring up and Dembe - his last remaining confidant/friend/brother - likely to depart from his side over this conflict), I wouldn’t be surprised if Red was the one who’s headed towards yet another implosion, which is the most potent, grade-A angst fodder there is. Not to mention the twisted irony of how isolation as a means of survival is now the very thing that’s actively destroying him.

yeah, but i think that’s only part of it. idk i dont know anything about music, but it also probably has to do with how it’s written to sound like cutscene music, instead of just bg. the ending also reminds me of a LOT of hs flash endings (especially wv?: rise up) i dunno why
