oh no
on the infinity train and your friend's egg finally cracks and then you see her number go up
also as long as im bitching about trying to learn accounting in a capitalistic hellscape, i wanna complain about the stock market.
so, the basic idea of investment was once upon a time, "i need money to start a business." "i will give you money to do that, if you give me some of the profits" "okay."
the stock market allegedly simplifies that process, and allows for massive amounts of people to invest in a company, and get profits, and a small share of voting power, in return. crowdfunding! yay!
except. except. people dont actually invest in companies in order to see that business flourish. they dont even KNOW what all theyve invested in because banks do all that shit now. the "stock" is just a really weird form of currency, and the rich assholes consolidate and do weird shit to still have all the voting power. the investment isnt for the investments sake, its with the hope that Number Go Up in the future, creating this stupid fucking infinite growth or bust problem we're running into.
again, i think that's obscene. i think its real fucked up to have money invested in the concept of money. i think if you crowdfund a shoe store or a computer lab or whatever the fuck, it should be because you actually want that thing to exist. what if kickstarter had fucking investment accounts like that. its garbage nonsense and im sure some fucking economist could tell me otherwise, but i cant see ANY practical reason to do it this way.
"Do companies pay cash dividends to give regular cash flows to the investors? Well, that might have been true 30 or 40 years ago.[...]This is no longer true. If i need cash from my investment portfolio, I can easily go online and sell a few shares."
(quote from the videos used in my accounting course)
I AM BITING AND SCRATCHING AND HURTING THE FINANCIAL SECTOR SO MUCH. HATE KILL KILL KILL.
WHY THE FUCK DID WE LET THIS HAPPEN.
"invest in a company, and you will get a share of the profits and voting power in how its run" is literally the most straightforward way to crowdfund a company under capitalism. "buy and sell random shares as the market fluctuates, never touching the companies you are investing in" is fucking nonsense garbage.
also if the original intent was still the primary way of making money on the stock market, that would help curtail the infinite growth problem, because "my shares give me like $200 a year" is a good deal! you don't need to wait for the stock price to change, you just...get money from the company! because you own part of it! you won't get RICH off of it unless you happen to strike gold, but it's a solid return on investment model. SOME people would still choose the risky "give me no dividends for now, i think this company is gonna get BIG" option, but companies with a steady business would still be very attractive to the majority i think. as it stands now though, why would you EVER bother with a steady company, when you can trade literally minute to minute if you want? so we incentivize being sensational over doing anything WELL. fucking. make stock mean anything again PLEASE.
i'm not a capitalist at all, i am pretty heavily socialist, but if we GOTTA do a capitalism, this is not a terrible system as it was conceived. pretty fair, all things considered. it pisses me off how much this all sounds reasonable on paper, but is a complete trash fire in reality.
mostly, dividends got less popular because they were replaced by stock buybacks, i.e. the company buys back some of its shares, which raises the price, which means the shareholders either got money directly (by selling their share) or indirectly (by making their stock more valuable). this in some ways 'the same thing' as dividends (money flows from the company to the shareholders) but has some advantages (you would have to pay taxes on the dividend immediately, but not on the stock getting more valuable until you sell it).
you might think those tax advantages are a bad idea but, ultimately, you would solve approximately zero of the problems of capitalism by replacing all stock buybacks with dividends. people will still want to invest in companies that make more money, because they will pay higher dividends, so companies will still want to grow.
i think what you want is for companies not to have stock prices? for nobody to be able to buy and sell fractions of a company after the fact based on if it looks good or not? but that just adds up to, well, not having the stock market. people being able to invest in a company when it gets started but then have to stick with that forever, and not let anyone else get in after the fact, because otherwise you'd have to let them buy and sell stock, at some price, and companies would want that price to be high.
to be fair, i absolutely do not want the stock market to exist. i'm not really sure if it can exist in a way that prioritizes good output instead of bizarre hacking of the system, especially not with the amount of people involved these days and the speed at which trading can happen. it was probably a lot more manageable when it was relatively difficult to get into, even if that was also deeply unfair.
and to be totally transparent, i am only a student. a first year at that. these are mostly the angry thoughts of the fairly uninformed, rather than like, a totally-thought-out thesis statement. that said, i feel like there HAS to be a better version than what we have now, even without a radical redesign, because i can't imagine "perfectly profitable and useful businesses are shuttered for not constantly growing" was ever the end goal here.
my gut instinct would be something like requiring you to keep stock for a set period of time, but i know that wouldn't even solve anything, the whole market would just be on a delay. but SOME way to bridge the severe disconnect between the purpose of the thing and the market for the thing seems necessary here.
Not now, kitten, m- da- m- your parental figure is in the middle of a gender crisis
does anyone have that 4chan post about the guy who got like. deradicalised from being an incel because he started taking care of shrimp?

warrior who came to me for advice: i just don’t know if i should listen to the telepathic trees, who say i should save the forest, or my adopted wolf mother, who says i should cut it down to build my city. that’s why i came to you… should i go with Psi Ents or Dog Ma?

I don't think helping blind people is what prevents the dismantling of nuclear weapons
and yet none of these images have image descriptions.
[ID 1: a tweet from thegallowboob showing an image of a railing covered in braille apparently describing the view for blind people. (It’s a nice view) accompanied by the text of “this railing on gazebo in Naples has braille describing the view for blind people. More of this please.
There is a reply from transastro that reads “Uhhh, maybe we should dismantle nuclear weapons first? Just a thought. End ID.]
[ID 2: a news article with a title that reads “Selfish: This man found time to build a birdhouse while JonBenét Ramsey’s Murder is still unsolved” accompanied by an image of a man building a birdhouse, and a smaller image of (presumably) JonBenét Ramsey. End ID.]
People missed the point of this entire post.
As a blind person this is so fucking funny to me
for the record, i think ideally businesses would be public-focused. providing a needed or wanted service, like libraries or public bathrooms. we as a society would invest in them, either through direct crowdfunding or through taxes, and in return get the things provided to us. the businesses have what they need to run, and everyone benefits, poor and rich alike. and we don't need to keep inventing jobs for people and inflating sales and sensationalizing shit to keep things running; we'd just have the shit we actually want/need.
the stock market, even as it was originally conceived, is not anywhere close to this. it still just creates needless class disparity and is based in weird ideas of "ownership" that i don't like.
HOWEVER, one of these systems is actually extant, and the other is still cursed out by people who remember the red scare and generally think being poor is a sign of moral degeneracy, so like, if we can at least unfuck the stock market somewhat, i'll fucking take it.
also as long as im bitching about trying to learn accounting in a capitalistic hellscape, i wanna complain about the stock market.

the backrooms are simply not as scary conceptually if there is Something In Them
the whole reason why they're so unnerving is BECAUSE there's nothing in them!! because they're unrelentingly liminal and lonely and uncomforting. there shouldn't be a monster guy in there chasing you. you should glimpse other humans (?) from a distance but they walk away before you can close the gap and then they're gone. things should run away from YOU. do u get it
"and there was a MONSTERowooowwohhhh" the monster is isolation and banal beige sameness and uncanny valley architecture. you fool. you rube. you're putting a hat on a hat and the second hat is not only unnecessary but it ruins the first hat!!!!!!! "there's a monster in there" great so now it's just another place for a monster to be. ridiculous
fine I will concede: you CAN actually put something in there while maintaining the vibes, but it should complement the location instead of just being a generic scary guy you could put literally anywhere
