Thinking about Bottoms again for this sole purpose: Hadestown AU
My first immediate thought was Hazel as Orpheus, because I was just hearing this interview with Reeve Carney about Orpheus as innocent and probably neurodivergent, and being naive but being able to see how the world could be in spite of the way it is is so very Hazel. And of course, PJ makes for a great hardened Eurydice who wants to see the world the way Hazel sees it, but is easily swayed by hunger. In PJ's case it wouldn't be literal hunger, which maybe ruins it, but maybe one could do something with her hunger for belonging? Because God and I know how much that is driving her...and I started to go into a whole tangent about the feelings and needs and hurts that I see in PJ, but I'm going to hit pause on that because once I start we'll be here all night.
With all of that said, I'm not sure that I want to leave it at the white characters. Other people, who I need to make sure I am reblogging, can explain much better than I how race and racism make Hadestown what it is, but it's there and it's important and I don't want to ignore it. So I'm considering...could Josie be Orpheus? Josie isn't quite as innocent as Hazel is, but despite the poor choices that Bottoms is about her making, Josie really has such a deeply caring heart. And I've written before about what a speaker she is. In Bottoms, she makes speeches that aren't true but are moving and inspiring and life-changing. Imagine what she could do if those speeches were true. I could see them having the same power as Orpheus' songs.
Figuring out a Eurydice parallel to Isabel is a little harder. Isabel is so soft. The fact that she manages to stay so soft in a world where she's been lied to and cheated and betrayed and assaulted is kind of a miracle. I almost feel like she and Josie are an Orpheus/Orpheus love story rather than an Orpheus/Eurydice love story, and I'm not entirely sure what to do with that. But I'm going to keep thinking about it.
Bottoms makes pulling as a loser lesbian seem a lot easier than it actually is. Then again, I am not ayo edebiri, which may help explain the difference
🗡️ here.
I don’t think Jeff cuddles or does aftercare. If you start reaching for him after he’s done putting you through a surface he takes it as your sign you want to go again and acts accordingly. And it spurs him on when you start shaking your head from overstimulation. He calls you bobblehead a lot. It’s not just sex he likes. It’s humiliating you whenever he wants.
hi 🗡️ i think you’re probably right about all of that! jeff is so fcking iconic lol, i looove how nick played the dumb jock role, and i’d give anything to be his slutty lil bobblehead 🙂↕️
casting ayo edebiri in Bottoms (2023) was such a bad casting choice, because how am i meant to believe girls weren't FLINGING themselves at Josie
Fanart I made for my friend of pj and hazel from bottoms (2023) !
I TRIED to replicate Andrew's spider costume and definitely failed, but i was too lazy to retry lmao
I'm posting it as the few art crumbles my sweet readers will get from me because i rarely draw these days (and rarely from a consistent fandom)
Anyhow, enjoy!
