Say what you will about las #fallas: it’s a loud, crowded, overhyped, environmentally unfriendly shitshow of a festival, sure. It’s been co-opted by boozy tourists, sure. But like Mardi Gras, it’s also a collective celebration of local culture and pride the likes of which the US seems to be short on these days — especially (and ironically) outside of immigrant communities. How do we define our collective identity? What do we celebrate together? Spain has taught us a lot about social capital: why it’s important, how to nurture it, what you lose when you give it up in favor of individualism. I am le tired of all the GD fireworks. But I’m not done with collectivist culture by a longshot. Together you can build and celebrate amazing things, then invite other people to the party. #socialism #bowlingalone (at Valencia) https://www.instagram.com/cauloccoli/p/BvFrshCl5XOdf4qYAJzmIg5GeIghAZehbO25TU0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=mte2buivfk7a
