We’ve got a big month ahead on Down These Mean Streets. Join me every Sunday in January for more old time radio detectives and crime fighters.
January 10th - It’s a triple feature of The Saint with adventures starring Vincent Price and Tom Conway as Simon Templar. Plus, we’ll hear the audition recording that launched the radio career of the “Robin Hood of modern crime.”
January 17th - It takes a thief to catch a thief, and we’ll hear from a pair of reformed criminals who switched to the right side of law and order - The Lone Wolf and Boston Blackie.
January 24th - Mail call! We’ll hear two detectives whose clients contact them via letters in response to the personal ads the sleuths run in the paper. Bob Bailey stars in Let George Do It and Alan Ladd is Dan Holiday in Box 13.
January 31st - We’ll close out the month with a trio of hard-boiled heroes - Gerald Mohr as Philip Marlowe, Jack Webb as Pat Novak For Hire, and William Gargan as Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator.

The letter that started it all. “Box 13″ is a syndicated radio drama about the escapades of newspaperman-turned-mystery novelist Dan Holiday, played by film star Alan Ladd. BOX 13
Actor Alan Ladd portrays retired newspaperman and mystery novelist Dan Holiday. The series was first aired in December 31, 1947 in New York City at WOR network. The show begins when Holiday's thirst for new ideas prompts him to place an intriguing advertisement in the classified ads that reads "Adventure wanted, will go anywhere, do anything - write Box 13, Star-Times." Of course this sort of ad calls out to all the crazies and weirdos who come into contact with the ad and Box 13 gets filled up with more requests and adventures than Holiday bargained for. All of which he sees as more research material.

uh yeah have a thing i guess.
Happy Birthday, Alan Ladd (September 3, 1913 – January 29, 1964)
His breakout roles came in noir gangster films of the 1940s, including This Gun for Hire and The Blue Dahlia. Frequently paired with actress Veronica Lake, Ladd played smooth, dangerous men and helped usher in a new portrayal of tough guys on screen. He’s perhaps most famous as the title character in Shane - a gunfighter who hopes to put his violent past behind him but who is forced to take up arms again to protect his future.
Radio fans will recognize Ladd as amateur detective Dan Holiday from Box 13. Ladd produced the series through his own Mayfair Productions and even contributed scripts to the program. Elsewhere on radio, he appeared as himself opposite George Burns and Gracie Allen and on Duffy’s Tavern. Ladd recreated several of his big screen roles on radio Hollywood showcases, and he made a number of starring appearances on Suspense.
