Mendel and Derrick

Derrick and Mendel are best friends of Ace, both are vorts. They live with Ace and other resistance members in the same base, on the outskirts of City-17.

Subject: Derrick

Pronouns: He/They

They are the sweetest vort you’ll ever see, really, he’s such a nice guy! Most people trust him and treat them with huge respect, mainly because he talks much more like a human and doesn’t sound like a Greek philosopher.

Disorder: Derrick was born with a disorder that kept him from communicating through flux-shifting and understanding vortessence. For that reason, he never felt like he was fitting in, apart from that, being a slave made his mental state decline even worse.

Derrick and humans: Since they appeared on Earth they were fascinated by humans, which were much simpler than vortigaunts, and he saw something similar to himself in those creatures. That’s why they started learning English and other human languages as fast as possible, and then he helped a lot of other vortigaunts with the learning of those.

Hobby: He loves human books, any type! History, fantasy, adventure, romance? They don’t care. He read most of the books he could find. Those stories written by humans really inspired Derrick, and they decided to write his own stories and even some poems. It’s hard to write with two fingers, but they somehow learned to do it.

Gender: Vortigaunts don’t have any concept similar to gender, they are just all the same, so Derrick never questioned anything about it. But when Ace explained it to him, he didn’t understand the need for that difference, but started asking what would he be. After some time and many questions, they figured out that they were something like male, but not fully. So, with many explanations from Ace, he started using the He/They pronouns (He felt that using those made him more human).

Appearance: He is pretty short, his middle arm was harmed while defending his base, that’s why he wears a bandage on it. His standard resistance member hat hides 3 of his eyes because they are blind, only one of his eyes, the big one, works properly. They wear a blue jacket, which makes him feel more connected to humans.

Pronouns: He/Him

He was the one who explain to Ace how to use the vortessence. Similar to the most of other vorts.

Relationship with Derrick: The first time they met was when Derrick got attacked by an antlion, Mendel had to save this poor guy. He noticed that Derrick wasn’t capable to use flux-shift, and that called his attention. They talked for a while, and Derrick finally felt safe around someone of his species. 

Appearance: He has a huge scar on his chest, he got it when some other resistance members helped him get his slave necklaces off. Let’s say that whoever it was never used an electric saw before. He also has a small bracelet that Derrick made for him. As they said, “Humans use this to show their friendship, I think it’s a cute tradition”.
