Happy Mer-May! Inspired by @motherofallsharks and @scrapnick, this is my Boxtrolls OC, Pepper, as a mermaid. Instead of enchanting sailors to the depths and drowning them with her songs, Pepper would much rather sit on a rock, speak with them, and learn about Cheesebridge, a human town a few miles away from the shoreline. Too bad she's not allowed up to the surface, especially alone, at the tender age of 6. It all started one day while unwittingly swimming through the territory of the feared shark merman, Archibald Snatcher, a notorious hunter famous for his hunting expertise, insatiable greed, and his habit of tipping the yacht of Lord Portley-Rind, the Cheesebridgian Mayor (he loves getting a reaction out of him more than anything). As she realizes that she's lost (again!), he finds her and threatens to eat her little fishtail as punishment for trespassing. Begging him for mercy, he lets his greed get the better of him by proposing that if she stays, does what he says, and sings for him, he won't eat her little fish tail. Though the agreement was unexpected, he didn't mind (he knew how impressed the Mer-Kingdom would be at the sound of a supposedly beastly shark merman fathering a delicate little mermaid). She'll put up with his teasing her as she listens to his stories of him twisting his tail around unsuspecting animals and pulling them away to their deaths. Not to mention, his ability to distract sailors and their passengers long enough to trap nearby freshwater seacows. In return, he always encourages her to sing for him, as practice for when she's old enough to enchant humans with her voice. She will certainly be of more use then. It's hard to make both human and fishy friends when your Dad hunts them down regularly.
