And just like that, it hit me. I wrote him as supernatural, above-it-all, an answer to the ever-present doubt of divine existence. But he just wasn’t. Sentence after sentence, page after page I tried to bring his light to life on paper, but each time I hit the same roadblock, and this is why:

You can’t write fiction about a fake person. A character is an idea with life breathed into them, fleshed out to the point where they may only exist in your head, but their hurts and actions are real enough they can’t be denied. You have to make them human, make them real in your head, even if they aren’t in real life. 

He was real off the page, but he wasn’t the person I thought I knew. The person I’d invented in his image fell flat on the page. That should have been the first red flag.

He was never divine. He was just a boy, so when it went to shit, why was I surprised?
