Stage Mothers and BigPond Music to release
The Aussie BBQ 2011 documentary.
For the last 9 years Stage Mothers (Glenn Dickie and Mary Mihelakos) two music lovers from Melbourne have been presenting The Aussie BBQ which has become the biggest showcase of Australian music outside of Australia.
The Aussie BBQ started as an idea in 2003 to throw together a little BBQ for the Australian bands at South by Southwest Music Festival. It has now grown to become an international circuit of shows that includes Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, Brighton, Liverpool, London as well as SxSW in Austin. In 2011 it featured 36 Australian bands over 3 stages making it the biggest Australian only gig outside of Homebake. The Aussie BBQ has showcased over 200 of the biggest names in Australian music from Powderfinger to Birds Of Tokyo, Missy Higgins to Washington, The Living End to The Jezabels.
This year Stage Mothers have teamed up with BigPond Music to bring you a glimpse of what it takes for Australian musicians to make it on a global scale with their documentary of the Aussie BBQ 2011; I Don’t Know Why, But We Do...
With close to 60 acts on the road this year it was the biggest contingent of Australian acts to tour through North America at the one time, all trying to establish global success stories. IDKWBWD features interviews and behind the scenes from artists such as The Jezabels, Little Red, Cloud Control, Washington, Boy & Bear, Dan Brodie and a whole lot more as they talk you through how it really is on the road.
BigPond Music Manager Matt McAleer said “BPM has always proudly promoted Australian music so it was only natural that we support the Aussie BBQ by commissioning this fly on the wall documentary. This partnership builds on the great work Stage Mothers are doing overseas by helping to promote these artist at home in Australia.”
The IDKWBWD documentary will premier on the BPM TV music channel on 29th May at 8.30pm and then made available for on-demand viewing.
To coincide with this year’s tour Stage Mothers have also released a digital only compilation record inventively titled “The Aussie BBQ Tour 2011” which is available to download through BigPond Music and other online outlets, featuring a selection of 15 great Australian tracks by artists including; The Jezabels, Sampology, Blue King Brown, Hungry Kids Of Hungary and Wagons.
