When was the last time you had your boobs measured? If you are like most women, the chances are you have been measured since your teens. And while we all dream of boobs getting bigger beyond our teens, they tend to stay the same size - or do they?
It’s a common misconception that your boobs stay the same size. While you might not be going up a cup size, your breasts do in fact change size, and these changes often fluctuate throughout the course of the year. That means those measurements you got years ago might not be the most accurate!
The truth is, you probably need to get a free bra fit to make sure there are no changes to your sizes. In fact, you should always be going for a bra fitting at least once a year, with it being recommended to get a new bra fit at least every six months!
That’s right, you need to get your boobs measured every six months!
While this may seem like overkill, there is a host of reasons why you should be doing so. Breast sizes change throughout the year, with a variety of causes that may be behind the changes. From your time of the month to your current diet, there are so many factors that may cause your boobs to slightly change in size.
Read on to find out more, and why it’s so important to get a bra fit every six months!
HI GUYS! since i’ve started working at a certain undergarment retailer, I’ve learned a whole lot about bras and fittings and stuff. I’ve also learned that there are a lot of people who don’t know what to look for in a well-fitting bra, or even know their own bra size!! so i wanted to put together a little guide of tips and tricks for finding the perfect fit :-) i hope y’all enjoy!!
IN THIS GUIDE WE WILL BE DISCUSSING:
how to measure yourself for a bra size
how to know if a bra fits well (or doesn’t)
what to look for if you want your bust to appear larger/smaller
different places/brands to try shopping!
the best way to wash/care for your bras
MEASURING YOUR BRA SIZE AT HOME!! (note: i’m from the US, so my numbers correspond to US sizes)
YOU WILL NEED: a tape measure and yourself! if possible, measure yourself without a shirt and wearing a bra you already own (this will help by measuring the breasts in the position where they would normally be supported by a bra)
step 1. standing up straight, first wrap the measuring tape underneath the bust. it should be snug, but not tight, and level all the way around. (pls ignore the fact that i’m using a ribbon.... i misplaced my tape measure lol but you still get the idea) round this measurement up to the nearest even number. (ie; if you get a 35″ measurement, round up to 36) this is your band size.
step 2. take the measuring tape again, and this may be a little trickier, but this time wrap it around the fullest part of the bust. usually this is somewhere over the nipple area, but everyone is different! again, it should be level all the way around, and snug but not too tight. now take this measurement, and subtract the first number from it. (ie; if your band is 36, and you measure 39 around your bust, subtract 39-36 to get 3.) the number you get corresponds to the cup size! 0=AA, 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D, et cetera.
you can tell that someone had a lot of fun making the bra sizing process as funky and ridiculous as possible. if you need help with the numbers, you can click here for a handy-dandy chart !!
*~*~*~*REMEMBER: this size measurement is only a guideline! it’s not always exact because everyone is shaped differently, and every bra fits differently! but this is a really easy way to have a solid place to start :)
BRA SHOPPING TIPS!!!
now that we’ve got a ballpark figure of what size bra we should wear, here comes the scary part: SHOPPING FOR A BRA!! just kidding, it’s not scary :) but it can be confusing, so here’s some other various fit tips!
~ before you buy a bra, try it on if possible!! since every bra is made differently, your size in one style/brand may be different than your size in another. always try on to make sure you’re getting the best fit!
~ when trying on, hook the bra on the middle set of hooks. this way, you can adjust for if your weight fluctuates up or down. and make sure the straps are adjusted also!
~ HOW TO TELL when a bra fits: it should feel supportive and comfortable throughout! the band should feel secure and be level all the way around. you should be able to move freely without too much slippage or discomfort.
***FUN FACT: the majority of support in a bra actually comes from the BAND, rather than the shoulder straps. so if you want more breast support, look for a bra with a thicker/heavier-duty band. FUN FACT***
~ WRONG CUP SIZE: if you’re bubblin’ / spilling out of the cups, go up a letter. if there’s a gap between your breast and the cup, go down a letter.
~ WRONG BAND SIZE: if the band feels tight or rides up in the back, go up a number size. if it feels loose or if you can pull the cups away from your body more than a couple inches, go down a number size.
~ if you want MORE bust: look for push-up cups or more padding. many stores also sell foam or gel inserts and pads that you can put into a bra to increase the appearance of the size :)
~ if you want LESS bust: look for minimizers or less padding. minimizers usually have a wider, flatter shaped cup which gives the illusion of a smaller bust.
good brands to look into!
Victoria’s Secret - yes, I couldn’t talk about bra brands without VS :) while they only tend to carry smaller sizes like 32A-38DD, their selection has improved recently and they have a lot of pretty styles :) however, their bras tend to run smaller and also tend to not hold up as well as other brands. I definitely recommend hand washing bras from here, esp. lacy ones, to prolong their quality
Soma Intimates - i absolutely swear by their vanishing back bra. by far the most comfortable bra i’ve ever worn!! they have a lot of different styles for different needs, and carry sizes from 32A to 44G! also their cool nights pajamas are sooo fantastic and comfy
Aerie - super cute and comfy everyday bras! they carry sizes 32-40, A-DDD. PLUS they have a really cool bra guide that lets you choose a size and see the bras on girls with that cup size!
Bare Necessities - this website carries a lot of different brands and a HUGE variety of sizes, 28-56, A-N !! if at all possible, I recommend finding a style/brand and then seeing if you can locate it in a store close to you, so you can try it on. you can find a lot of the brands on here in department stores!!
THE CARE AND KEEPING OF BRAS
~ the best way to wash your bras (especially ones with lace/detailing) is by hand, and then lay them flat on a towel to dry. if you’re like me and you’re lazy, you can machine wash them in a mesh delicates bag, but it’s still recommended that you lay them flat to dry. delicate care is the best way to prolong the life of your bras!!
~ it’s best to store them flat in a drawer also! and don’t stuff the cups inside each other, that can warp the shape of the cup :)
THANK YOU FOR READING!!!!!!!!
I HOPE Y’ALL LEARNED STUFF!!!! please feel free to add on to this post if you have more tips, and ask me any questions if you have any!!!!! thank you so much!!!! lots of love, laina :)
