Bracken Cave, home to the largest bat colony in the world. Tens of millions of Mexican free-tail bats use the cave as their spring/summer roost. Our guide said it can take the bats up to four hours to all emerge after the babies are born in the summer. The sounds of their wings flapping sounded like a downpour of rain. Perfect.

Up to 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats stream out of Bracken Cave in Texas on their nightly hunt for insects. It takes about three hours for the colony to leave the cave.

Mexican Free-Tailed Bats emerge from Bracken Cave, outside of San Antonio, TX. This cave is the spring/summer home for the largest colony of any mammal on earth, with over 15 million individuals. This emergence continues at this density for up to four hours after the babies are born mid-summer.
