An unusual groundcover for a shaded location is Sanicula epipactis 'Thor' (Hacquetia) which is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial. In late winter it produces tiny yellow flowers surrounded by variegated bracts. The leaves develop later with a narrow white margins.

Pink Dogwood

An interesting thing about dogwood blossoms is that the showy parts aren’t the petals.  They’re actually bracts.  The true flowers are tiny and clustered in the center.
