Tuesday, June 13: Mindset, “The System”
A Bullet for Cinderella was one of the great lost metal albums of the 1990s: Mindset’s second record stripped away the rap metal inclinations of their debut in favor of a precise yet groove-driven blast of traditional heavy metal, but poor distribution by Noise (at the time senselessly rechristened as F.A.D. Records) along with poor timing (the only acceptable metal circa 1999 was nu metal) rendered it a non-starter and the band broke up not long after. But the album’s refusal to bow to trends gave it a timelessness that allowed it transcend its era, and tunes like “The System”, with its slash-and-burn riffing, held up far better than anything by P.O.D. Roddy Lane’s vocals split the difference between Maynard James Keenan and Bruce Dickinson, floating over Brad Divens’ smooth production. The song was direct, catchy and fun, a perfect blend of hooks and heft, and brilliantly made the case for metal’s vitality during its most maligned era.
