Second Chances

(ABC: I'm talking to you. Cut the cord.)"][/caption] I had a LONG conversation last night about second chances. Second chances in the vein of when you think the he or she in your life deserves one. I've given a second chance - even a third and fourth - several times in my life. They haven't worked. None were disastrous per se, but we mostly ended up re-enacting the orginal relationship we had--the one that didn't work the first time. The second time around ended in exactly the same way as the first along with the compounded fatigue of having to work so hard just to make it...work. So much emotional labor. My mom and dad always say dating relationships shouldn't be that hard. The true trials and tests come along when you get married. Yes, relationships take work and sacrifice. But it should be feel good to put out that effort. The relationship should not want to make you stab out your eyeballs and/or need three naps a day because you are worn out from trying so hard. But then, second chances to work for some people. I know they do. When is it right? Anyone have any stories?

I only started watching the ABC series The Bachelor 5 years ago. I considered myself as having really good taste, and truly, I thought the Bachelor was beneath me. I thought it was fake, and stupid, that the people on it were all shrill, vapid, morons, and the people who watched it must have been even dumber for buying into such a load of crap. Then I watched it. The first season I ever watched was Brad Womack’s second go ‘round. This is Brad:
He is a moron. It was his second time on the show. The first time, he didn’t pick anyone. He got to the final two and didn’t propose to anyone, and didn’t even want to continue a relationship with either woman. In short, he is a tool. One by one, women got out of limos and reacted to this fool. One of them even slapped him, for dragging women along and not even having the nerve to pick one. I was in. These women weren’t all vapid idiots. (Of course, some of them were.) Some of them were smart, and spunky, and assholes, and *gasp* relatable. You get suckered in because the next season’s Bachelorette is one of the women that the Bachelor doesn’t pick, and it goes back and forth. So you spend a whole season investing yourself in some broad and then you watch her heart get broken. And if she is pretty/charismatic/angry enough, she is given the chance to pick from an assortment of slack-jawed ding-dongs who are either boring, or assholes, with a handful of sweethearts in the bunch.
This is one of my favorite shows, if not my favorite reality show.
I decided to start writing about it because no one was stopping me, and I wanted to talk about it, and if you read this, and want to talk about it, we can talk about it together. I will definitely post after watching each new episode, but may post other stuff through-out the week if I am thinking about it.
If you haven’t watched it, give it a shot. It’s a train wreck but if you are a naive goon like me who wants to believe in love, even if its on an over-produced wildly edited reality TV show, it's a good time.
