3: Wooler to the Cairngorms

Dodging elks

I set off from the Scottish border, drove around Edinburgh, crossed a bridge to Dumfermline, headed up the East coast to St. Andrews, crossed another bridge to Dundee and carried on to Aberdeen before turning West and finally settling in the Cairngorms National Park.  

St. Andrews was stunning and Dundee was impressive.  A recurring theme in Scotland seems to be that you turn a corner and from nowhere appears a huge urban settlement or beautiful view of the coastline or mountains.

The Cairngorms were beautiful.  Photos will follow.  I think a visual upload will be more effective than repeating the word “incredible” and “valley”.  

The Scottish people seem to be polarised.  They either look at you as though they’ve got Mel Gibson on speed dial ready to re-enact William Wallace’s most triumphant moments, or they go out of their way to be very nice to you.  You can never tell which is which though.  It’s like Scottish roulette.  

I’ve never been anywhere so silent though.  It’s most inconvenient when you have Elastic Heart by Sia stuck in your head.  Anyway, tonight I’m sleeping by a river near Braemer.  I was trying to use the wi-fi of a nearby hotel but there appeared to be a barn dance with drunkards singing “Hi Ho Silver Lining” which I found most off-putting.  Their toilet was good though.  It had a wooden seat.  Must recommend. 

On three separate occasions I had to dodge deer on the road.  The first situation of which there were around 20 of them that all scarpered away. I could of course write more than just these bullet points but I think the photos will speak louder.
