Seems Captain Caveman Was Made for Diving, and Then Some
One particular lake among Minnesota's World-Renowned and Far-Famed Ten Thousand such, specifically one in the Brainerd Lakes region, has a rather extended patch of shallows that don't just hug the shore ... it turns out being about ankle-deep for a little under 500 feet, eventually translating into a gradual drop down to more normal swimming-type waters and, in its course, deeper such revered by diving types in particular.
The case of which proved especially worthwhile on this summer's afternoon when, perhaps out of sheer ennui or a desire to "do something different" for once, the Teen Angels "themselves"--Brenda, Dee-Dee and Taffy--as well as their Captain Caveman decided to try diving in this particular lake. Especially Cavey, who, as past experience has shown, can be quite the freediver, being able to maintain air in his prehistoric lungs at depths of as great as 50 feet below the surface. (The Teen Angels themselves would use SCUBA, with GoPro cameras mounted to their brows recording as much Cavey's diving exploits as theirs.)
And the walk between shore and the dropoff point (so to speak) in the shallows was bound to be a comfortable one, even with the Teen Angels wearing bikinis, air tanks, masks and fins ... and Cavey just wearing his hairy prehistoric self (the club having to be left behind for reasons obvious). And once things got roughly calf-high for the Teen Angels, Dee-Dee essentially went through the checklist to make sure everything was in proper order ... and once out of the way, Captain Caveman could be said to "lead the way," with the Teen Angels getting their regulators in place, Go-Pros switched on, even the mouthpieces getting the proper "bite."
Cavey, naturally, diving in head first and the Teen Angels close behind ... and for such an interesting specimen among the Ten Thousand Lakes of Minnesota as this, not getting real deep until about a quarter mile from shore, Cavey was actually rather graceful for a lake bottom as was mostly sand with patches of aquatic grass interspersed by the inevitable curly-leaf pondweed and duckweed, common lake nuisances at any rate. But what was bound to impress even the most love-struck of the Teen Angels, Taffy by name, was how Cavey managed to stand on the lake bottom (about 40 feet from surface in that general vicinity) in his own bare feet without a weight belt. and do some pull-ups--DEFINITELY a GoPro moment once the image cards were reviewed and edited back on shore.
So what an afternoon that turned out being: Cavey actually making no less than three freedives, wearing only himself for the most part and yet managing to swim with considerable grace breathholding. And by the time it was getting early evening, essentially suppertime, all three of the Teen Angels, while not exactly doctors themselves, must have seemed dumbstruck at just how adept Cavey could be in freshwater diving, and yet manage to "just be himself." It was sheer defiance of all known laws of geriatrics and physics, especially in coming up with a "highlight reel" to share via e-mail to some close university friends having an interest in such things for research especially (and, as seemed usual, equally dumbstruck as to just how such could be possible).
Yet still, as Taffy put it to her somewhat screwy love that evening, "Ohhhh, isn't my Cavey-Wavey oh so remarkable under the water?" To which Cavey was bound to release his inevitable chuckle at Taffy's fingers going through Cavey's hairy prehistoric body, eventually to comment, "Unga-bunga, Taffy--Captain Caveman rather wonderful in water ... especially underwater!" And with the inevitable kiss between Taffy and Cavey ... you can easily guess the rest. (Thankfully, Brenda and Dee-Dee didn't go into "ick factor" here, instead taking due interest in such pointed aquaphilics such as were bound to reach the lake shallows around moonrise, with Taffy and Cavey playing somewhat whimsically in the lake's moonlight waters.)
