Lilienne sees the woman staying in Isobel’s shack from time to time. She sees her fishing on the pier at dusk, looking almost peaceful in the pale blue morning. And then at night, Lilienne might glimpse her coming back home, gun clutched tightly to herself, nearly breaking into a run as if the devil himself was chasing her. Maybe he is, Lilienne thinks. And maybe it’s the devil she’s waiting for now, hoping he’ll come for the rotting mass beside her and take her, too, for good measure.

Or: One morning, Lilienne passes by the pier and sees Ruby sitting beside a corpse.
