Which Tales of game is a good starting point for someone who has never played any of them? Also which one has the best girls
Well, that depends on a lot of things. Here are my thoughts about the games and you can decide which sound interesting.
Tales of Berseria - A very solid game. Good story, good characters, good combat, good villain. I mean the game doesn’t really do much wrong. A couple of choices I disagree with such as enhancing weapons and getting a ton of copies of weapons so that you can disenchant them which leads to a lot of inventory clutter. The bonus dungeon is also pretty lackluster but it offers so extra story content if you are into that thing. It is probably in my top 3 but we will see how I feel about it in another week.
Tales of Zestiria - Decent characters but just about everything else is bad or just non-existent. It is the game that came out before Berseria but it is a sequel to it because it takes place 1000 years after Berseria. I’d really just avoid it unless you really enjoyed Berseria’s world or you just want another Tales game to play.
Tales of Xillia 2 - Slightly better than Xillia 1. The game is just more of the same as Xillia 1 but just with more stuff which is usually better. One of my big gripes is that the game often splits your party into groups that you don’t choose. Not a huge deal but it can be a little irksome. Decent cast, some good, some are whatever. Worth a play for sure. But I would play Xillia 1 first.
Tales of Xillia 1 - Pretty much just an average JRPG. Decent cast, decent story, decent world. There isn’t much to be upset about but there isn’t a ton to praise it about. You really can’t go wrong here but I can’t see anyone saying this is the best Tales game either. Worth a play for sure.
Tales of Graces F - Hoo boy. This is probably my second least favorite Tales game behind Zestiria. The one thing that this game has over Zestiria is the combat/game play is pretty good. A lot of people say the best in the series but I think it is just good. It does carry the rather mediocre plot and characters though. If you are looking for a great story or great characters this probably isn’t worth playing but if you like the Tales series and like the game play aspect of JRPGs then it is worth at least trying.
Tales of Vesperia - Many people claim this is the best entry in the series and it certainly has a lot of good things going for it. Everything about the game from what I remember is good or better. This is a great place to start. Sadly, the only version available in the US is on the Xbox 360 as the PS3 version never got released in America.
Tales of the Abyss - Probably my favorite in the series (Although Berseria is making a strong case.) One of the best casts in the series, great villains, the main protagonist is one of my least favorites in the series (which is weird because I still love the game) but I think that just speaks to how great everything else is. It is a PS2 game (And the rest of the games as we go on are from PS2 or older systems) so the gameplay is a bit dated but if you can get around that you have arguably one of the best entries in the series.
Tales of Legendia - I am currently playing this game (Probably like 30% through it) It’s okay. I really can’t recommend it at this point in the game. It pales in comparison to the other two entries I play released on the same console. (Symphonia and Abyss, I can’t speak for others cause I haven’t played them.) Perhaps it gets better later. Also the character designs are a disaster.
Tales of Symphonia - If Vesperia isn’t someone’s favorite it is probably this one. The game has a fantastic cast, an interesting world, a good plot, and a good villain. The biggest drawback is the older game play designs. You can’t free run in this game in combat making it very restrictive and the dungeons in this game are a nightmare. If you do play it use a guide to get through them and save yourself a headache. If you can get past the poor dungeons and dated combat you have another top entry in the series.
Tales of Destiny - I only got halfway through this one before I lost my save file ( I really should suck it up and just play through it again) but the game was decent till that point. I didn’t particuarly like or hate the characters or the story. I was pretty apathetic to the whole thing. If you like swords though you’ll probably enjoy the game as most characters use swords and the swords are living things that have their own personality.
Tales of Phantasia - The first game in the series. The game is actually overall one of the better entries in the series. As you can imagine it is a bit dated but teh gameplay isn’t bad. The characters are all pretty enjoyable and the story is actually better than a lot of other entries in the series. It has it’s flaws. Most old RPGs do. But I would still recommend playing this when you get the chance. Make sure you play the PSX version though.
Any other Tales games I haven’t played so you will have to look at those on your own.
As far as which game has the cutest girls that is tough. Each game has at least one.
My vote goes to Abyss or Berseria though.
