For this portrait, I drew inspiration from my sister who has wild, curly hair. Additionally, I was inspired by Picasso’s “The Kiss” and “Girl Before a Mirror”. The portrait falls under Picasso’s interpretation of the Cubist style, where the subject is fragmented, and seen from multiple angles at once. Also, her hair has been separated into geometric shapes, and I experimented with the different textures and patterns in her hair (similarly to how Picasso used pattern in “Girl Before a Mirror”). The colors and overall form was influenced by “The Kiss”. This drawing overall conveys that my muse has a unique, yet sophisticated demeanor.

Ik was dus in New York. Of beter gezegd, in Manhattan. Voor vier dagen. Met één hele dag voor het Metropolitan Museum, zoals ik vorige week beschreef. Even de rekenmachine erbij. This weekend I went to see the George Braques exhibit at the Grand Palais. It is open until January, this I highly suggest it to anyone here or coming here. The piece above, entitled La Musicienne, turned out to be my favorite.

The questions it evoked in me on this day are as follows: Where does the musician end, and the music begin? Is there a difference between the two? 

The answers, which I have since formulated: There is no defined line. In creating art, you are imparting yourself into this art and placing it into the outside world, thus also sharing yourself with this world as well. In being an artist of any sort, I believe Braques is saying, you become your art and your art becomes you.
