I've recently been tested for MTHFR and found to have single side. My doctor suggested yoga, but I was in too much shock of finally having an answer to get more info. Are there any foods I can eat or should avoid to help minimize my negative symptoms?
Because of your MTHFR deficiency, your body cannot use folic acid, vitamin B12 and to a lesser extent vitamin B6 the way it should be used. Folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 are necessary for the metabolism of homocystein amino acid. With an MTHFR deficiency your body can not transform enough homocystein into methionine (another amino acid), thus homocystein can accumulate in your body and cause negative symptoms.
Because your body cannot use folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 properly, you should try to avoid foods that contain them. But do not eliminate them totally, because you need other minerals and vitamins from this kind of food.
Foods that have high content of folic acid: leafy green vegetables like salads, artichoke, beetroot, cherry, kohlrabi, rhubarb, asparagus, spinach, red lentil.
Foods that have high content of vitamin B12: lamb meat, Emmental cheese, greek yogurt, beef, rabbit meat, shiitake mushroom, egg, tuna.
Foods that have high content of vitamin B6: red lentil, dates, Einkorn wheat, almond, tuna.
And you should eat foods that are rich in methionine, because your body cannot produce enough of it. Foods that have high methionine content: brasil nuts, milk, pork, quinoa, ricotta cheese, tofu, turkey, white beans.
Thank you for your question! I was glad to answer it.
