Among the many books written about designer Dieter Rams one surely was missing: a complete work catalogue that not only covers his most famous, museum-grade designs but literally any design he developed himself or in collaboration with others. Obviously, Klaus Klemp, since 2022 head of the Dieter and Ingeborg Rams Foundation, was of the same opinion and closed this gap: in 2020 he published „Dieter Rams - The Complete Works“ with Phaidon, a catalogue that covers everything between his earliest sketch for a chair to a late handbag design. And the catalogue proves one thing: Rams’s incredible consistency in design and his stubborn way of evolutionizing rather than revolutionizing. This sustainable approach shows in many of his products where the inside rather than the outside changed over time and steered clear of fashions, trends and other shenanigans.

The catalogue presents each design, no matter if it went into production or remained a prototype, in pictures and a brief text that explains and contextualizes it. Hence, and since the book closed a significant gap in Rams literature, it is a highly recommended publication for quick reference and eye candy alike.

Although one might be of the opinion that there isn’t much more to add to the historiography of Dieter Rams and his work for Braun and others the present volume proves us wrong: Klaus Klemp’s „Dieter Rams - The Complete Works“, recently published by Phaidon, actually is the long-awaited work catalogue for quick references to Rams’s impressive oeuvre. The book basically covers everything in between his earliest sketch for a chair to a late handbag design and simply proves one thing: Rams’s incredible consistency in design and his stubborn way of evolutionising rather than revolutionising, a very sustainable approach that shows in many of his products where the inside rather than the outside changed over time. Each design, no matter if it actually went into production or remained a prototype, is presented in pictures and a brief text explaining and contextualising it. It didn’t expect to say it but: this is a must-have!
