Braxie, the Flatwoods Monster
Very much inspired by the 3D illustration of @everydaylouie!
Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 14 — Flatwoods Monster
On the evening of September 12, 1952, in Braxton County, West Virginia, three boys — brothers Eric and Fred May and their friend Tommy Hyer — claimed to have witnessed a bright object shoot across the sky before it crashed down on land owned by a farmer named G. Bailey Fisher.
The boys decided to investigate the crash site, believing it might have been a meteorite that they wanted to try and find. They told their mother, Kathleen May, who accompanied them, along with her cousin Eugene Lemon, a West Virginia National Guardsman, and two other children.
The group spotted a red glowing light in the woods near the crash site. Eugene Lemon aimed his flashlight at the light and the group said they saw a "tall, man-like figure with a round, red face surrounded by a pointed, hood-like shape." The entity made a hissing sound and began to glide towards the shocked group. Lemon screamed, dropped his flashlight, and ran. Kathleen and the children were quick to follow his retreat but the creature did not pursue them.
I went with a sort of spider/cephalopod monster version of old "Braxie" here.
WV Cryptids from Blenko Glass
“The Flatwoods monster (also known as the Braxton County monster,[1] Braxie,[2] or the Phantom of Flatwoods),[3] in West Virginia folklore, is a creature reported to have been sighted in the town of Flatwoods in Braxton County, West Virginia, United States, on September 12, 1952, after a bright light crossed the night sky.”
Braxie
Surprised I hadn't drawn @wonderwaffle93.bsky.social's Braxie sooner, especially since The Flatwoods Monster is like my favorite cryptid. Granted it less because I'm into cryptids, and more because the Flatwoods Monster has appeared in a lot of random video games and caught my interest that way.
Jesse managed to cram 40 years of Offworlder training into 17, so it's not too far off that Braxie might be able to pick up on things just as fast.
Though Ember would kick Jesse's ass if they attempted to make Braxie also cram all that learning into that time frame too.
