“Don’t pretend that you cared about me.”
Threepio had AGREED to be placed in Padme’s care, and had even seemed PLEASED to have a purpose once more; Anakin was thus understandably CONFUSED when several passive comments from him had snowballed into a very COLD argument about Anakin’s ten year ABSENCE. He had possessed the consideration to leave the subject alone while they had been on Tatooine, but it resurfaced with a vengeance once everything had calmed down.
Anakin had made it clear his TIMING was terrible, that he had to return to Coruscant and couldn’t be pulled into THIS of all things. He punctuated his words, chilly as they seemed in retrospect, with ASSURANCES.
Of course Threepio wouldn’t BELIEVE him after that.
His back had been to him, but he turned now to look at him.
“That’s not TRUE , Threepio, and you know it’s not true. You were everything to me when I needed you. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you, but you can’t say the last ten years invalidates the ones before it. I’ve ALWAYS cared about you.”
