my half of an art trade with @breadpartyeighthundred!!
Hey Ashley I was going over the archives today and also wondering about the whole cart thing and I remembered that first materials have their own special snowflake khert fields. Is it possible the line is leading into such a place?
It's a good thought, but we already saw in chapter 7 that Duane's line leads into the normal khert. So we may as well presume it still leads there. There's no real reason we've seen for that to have changed.
The fact that it's entering the khert right there in the mess of silver and eels is what's significant :)
With that said, even though Duane's soul is in the khert, remember how he acted in chapter seven? Not recognising Sette, not reacting to their environment, and still caught up in another time and place even as they ran from Murkoph? Duane's soul may enter the khert at night, but as we're already seeing in this new "dream," it doesn't seem to acknowledge that it's there. I see no friendly fish, no insane ghost-monsters, no endless horizon of fractal gold and blue. It looks more like Duane's own mind; indeed, just like a dream.
