“And all that I regret,
I have before, I will again”
Breaking Benjamin - Blood
new thing I'm doing! my music is a huge part of my life and I don't talk about it enough. I'll be sharing it with you here from now on. if you're not interested in seeing these posts, feel free to blacklist the tag Harley's Music.
my song of the day is: Save Yourself, by Breaking Benjamin!
I've been following this band since the release of Phobia in 2006, and their music is very special to me. Breaking Benjamin and Rise Against were my first steps towards forming my own tastes, after years of listening to only what my friends and family liked. I do still enjoy many of the same things my family does, and my enjoyment of some music has occasionally outlasted my friendships, but the feeling will always be different. this, this is mine. I found it and I love it and no one can take that from me.
disclaimer: I did my best to make this coherent through a severe migraine and heavy painkillers, have mercy
Happy Friday! Breaking Benjamin released the final chapter in their three-part music video about a story of a father trying to reunite with his daughter. Will they reunite after all?! Watch the video to find out!
A Babbling Music Review - When Bands Evolve: A Talk About Breaking Benjamin’s Ember
Superstitious or not, Friday the 13th was a good day for Breaking Benjamin fans this month.
That is because Breaking Benjamin resurfaced with their sixth studio album Ember on the supposedly “unlucky day” of the year. On the same day, Breaking Benjamin surprised the fans with a new music video for “Torn in Two.”
Months before the release, a 30-second clip of “Torn in Two” was leaked on Youtube and racked up more than 10,000 views. So fans not only get to buy the album on the release date but to hear the anticipating song “Torn in Two” AND see a music video for it! So consider themselves lucky!
Since the release of Dark Before Dawn in 2015, the band came back with a heavy oompf and a dark anthem as they released a supernatural music video for “Red Cold River” the first single off Ember. The dark and sinister video “Red Cold River” was a window view into what the band has in store for the fans. Because then the narrative from the “Red Cold River” music video continues in “Torn In Two” with references from past music videos. These references are much more than a creative niche that the band wanted to play around with, but it was a retrospective video revisiting the band’s past to get a sense of how long they’ve come.
As musicians evolve, so does their music. Nothing stopped lead singer Benjamin Burnley from continuing the band’s legacy after a hiatus following a band dispute and Burnely’s health issues between 2010-2011. In 2015, the band rises from the ash as Burnley becomes the only sole original member with a new line up (bass guitarist Aaron Bruch, rhythm guitarist Keith Wallen from Adelitas Way, lead guitarist Jasen Rauch from Red, and drummer Shaun Foist from Picture Me Broken).
Before the Ember was released, BB allowed fans to get a taste of what was coming their way as the band released the heaviest tracks “Feed The Wolves,” “Psycho,” “Blood,” and “Save Yourself” aside from “Red Cold River.”
Being that the album is out now and we could hear it all in its entirety, four songs that were not released prior to the album release date stood out. For instance, “Tourniquet” begins with a sick guitar intro followed by haunting lyrics such as “I will lay beside the dead cause I don’t want to live inside this hell” showing that their lyrical content transferred over from Dark Before Dawn exploring the realm of light vs dark, but a bit more sinister with no boundaries. Like Dark Before Dawn, Ember explores the theme of life and death, light versus dark, but much more on the dark side this time around and deep. Why this direction? If we want to go way back, the band has changed since Saturate and We Are Not Alone and from all the previous albums. BB headed in a dark path considering what they’ve been through over the years –a dispute that nearly crumbled the band and Ben’s health issues.
Ember is personable as we are given an insight into what phase the band is or was going through. The album does feature its darkest and heaviest moments but slows down and leaves the heavy riffs, the growls, and hard-hitting drum rolls to the side where the atmospheric ballad “The Dark of You,” a song about love, life, and death, is introduced. This ballad is expected and not a surprise as they always had a soft spot in their albums no matter how heavy the album is. Like “Forever” in Saturate, “Rain” in We Are Not Alone or “Ashes of Eden” in Dark Before Dawn, this track is easily categorized with them. And then there’s “Down” by far the song on the album that has the catchiest melody in the chorus.
All in all, this album mirrors Dark Before Dawn, bits, and pieces of their old material though instead of trying to overcome the darkness by finding the light, the band quits the bullshit and stays in the dark to face their demons or darkest troubles and explore the depth of darkness, unafraid to cross boundaries. And this is what makes this new chapter refreshing and personable. Best of all, Breaking Benjamin did not disappoint.
