is it just me or does yellow by yoh kamiyama sound like something ririka would listen to
Ohhh you don't understand what you've done, anon. I'm gonna prove why you're right by breaking down some of the lyrics in the song. Not only that, but I'm gonna break it down in a way that symbolizes who Ririka is and her relationship with Mary. Not only is this a song Ririka would listen to, but it's a song that represents Meariri and let me explain why:
つまりは好奇心に囚われてたんだ - "I mean, I was captivated by curiosity"
Ririka follows Mary everywhere she goes. (I know she was ordered to by Kirari, shush). She can't help but try and get to know her since Mary is so intriguing.
I broke something important"
In my opinion, this could symbolize how Ririka broke free from the person her clan formed her to be which was all she knew and an important aspect of her life. Mary helped her become herself and break free from the metaphorical and physical mask her family bestowed upon her from birth.
Whole cake without lights " (I think "lights" should actually be candles, but I could be wrong)
I see this as (from Ririka's perspective) Mary being someone desirable and alluring, yet not somebody who would capture the average onlooker's attention. She may be well known in Hyakkaou, but she isn't really considered "popular".
Small bodies just gathering together'
This represents Mary's friend group and how Ririka is slowly but surely becoming accepted in this friend group. It's new and unexpected, something Ririka didn't sign up for, but isn't complaining that it's happening.
Easy to imagine and safe"
Quite literal. It's easy for Ririka to imagine having a normal life and a normal friendship with Mary. It's easy for Ririka to feel safe around her.
I'm a stupid child, don't go anywhere"
I'm fairly confident this is something she was constantly told growing up. Things like "You are nobody when you aren't Kirari" or "Don't leave our sight if you are not Kirari or if you are not wearing your mask. We cannot allow people to see you as a real person because you are not." This kind of emotional abuse would cause Ririka to believe it and listen to what she was told so she wouldn't get into any trouble. She doesn't want to be a "stupid child" when/if she no longer does what is expected of her.
Heavy identity wakes up dull"
This is when Ririka finds herself. After being denied of developing her own personality for 17-18 years of her life, she had to create an identity of her own; which must have felt heavy and dull since she only just started to figure out who she was as a person and learn just how deceiving and manipulating the world can be.
I still wanted to stay innocent"
Perhaps this is a side of Ririka that wanted to remain as the masked girl who was Kirari's shadow. After all, it was all she ever knew. When she wore her mask, she was blinded by many things and in a way was "innocent" whenever she wore it. A part of her wanted it to remain this way so she wouldn't end up losing said innocence or get hurt.
Just throw it away"
This line is very bluntly a way of Ririka throwing away her masked persona because of the treatment she receives from Mary. Mary prefers Ririka without her mask and is the only one who physically removed it from her. The affection and praise she receives from Mary is a main incentive of that. Ririka is just hella gay and we love that for her
I hope summer is impossible"
This should be Ririka's final year of Hyakkaou which means once she graduates (doesn't necessarily have to mean during the Summer), that's when her real life really starts and she won't have Mary there with her while she experiences it, hence a feeling of sorrow or bitterness about what's to come for her since she will have to experience it on her own.
Mary's color. Her hair, her aura, everything about her embodies the color yellow. Something Ririka becomes drawn to.
It's changing, it's over, it's affirmative"
(It's changing) Her life. (It's over) Her position in the clan. (It's affirmative) Her new found identity and friendships. All of that applies.
Roll more and get deeper"
Ririka discovers that the more she escapes the shell of her past and quite literally rolls the dice of her fate, the deeper she spirals into newfound situations that she has to deal with on her own.
At the end, the top and bottom are upside down"
Everything Ririka has ever known, everything about who she was forced to be, was completely turned around after she met Mary and now she lives a new life. The one she should have.
Soooo yeah! This is what I came up with and y'all tell me what you think :)
