FAMILY If I had to describe Breakthrough Miami in one word it would be family. Breakthrough Miami makes kids feel like they are apart of something, although it is an educational enrichment program it differs from your average summer program. Along with the family feeling, Breakthrough Miami was a free program which is something that my mother greatly appreciated since she is a single mother. With the program I learned leadership skills, how to be myself, and how to be independent. At BTM, everyone knows everyone and you are able to build relationships with fellow students, teachers, and site directors that most people wouldn’t have the opportunity to do. Meet Trisha Pierre-Louis, a BTM scholar who recently graduated from North Miami Beach High School in May and of our Alumni Network’s newest members! She first became involved with Breakthrough after her mom signed her up for the program and she would go on to attend her first summer with BTM at their Kushman location. When reflecting about the time she has spent with the program, she offered some advice to future scholars: build relationships with your fellow students and everyone else and to take advantage of the resources that are made available to you (ranging from the connections that you make with teachers, to evaluation forms at the end of the summer). Trisha emphasized on how she strongly encourages students to attend BTM because not only is it an amazing experience, but it is also something that you can grow and learn from. She believes that Breakthrough is a program that is there to give you an extra step ahead and if you don’t take that extra step, you will be average and scholars with this program are not average- they exceed above. After being accepted into schools such as St. Thomas University, Florida Memorial University, and the University of Central Florida, Trisha chose to attend Florida Gulf Coast University where she is currently a freshman with plans on majoring in biology.
