The girls at Breakthrough Miami’s Carrollton Campus have been working with us to explore different forms of video art.  After viewing a range of video works -from George Melies to Jillian Mayer - for inspiration,  the girls took to the cameras in groups to create their own films questioning identity, stereotypes, and friendship.

The girls of Urgent Inc. have been working on different forms of video art.  Here in, What IS Girl?, they express different perspectives of going through girlhood and defeating stereotypes.

For the last two weeks, ICA ID Initiative has been working with South Florida Cares Mentoring Movement at Horace Mann Middle School.  The students have been planning a mural with artist Kyle Holbrook and the MLK Mural Project.   As part of the project, the ID Initiative worked with the students to teach them camera techniques for documenting the process of the mural's creation.

Substantial Selfies @ Lotus House, Breakthrough and Girl Power. 

For our first workshops, we have been looking at the meaning of Selfies; what they say, how they impact our self-esteem and how they change our perceptions of privacy.    The artists in our classes have created substantial selfies, comprised of words that form their identity.   View links and info about the artists we discussed and ideas for more projects here.

Real-time updates of the #selfie tag on Instagram

This week we are thinking about Selfies.  What do selfies say about us and how can we make them substantial?  Who has the right to our selfies?  

We have been looking at the works like Man Bartlett's Callback; Jesse Darling's Recouperation; and Jillian Mayer's collaborative project, Selfeed.  

What are YOUR thoughts on selfies?

Are selfies important? Do they say more about us than how we look?

Melanie: I think it tells the world who we are, what we like and what we don't like.

Aniya: It's all about me.
