Indie pop singer/songwriter Cassandra Kubinski has dropped her latest music video, "You Never Told Me", from her Billboard Heatseekers-charting EP Onward.
Empowered and inspiring, it's a cool video that follows the stories of 3 people who are holding themselves back from actually doing what they dream of doing, and how they turn it around - a teenage ballerina, a grocery store clerk, and an older guitar player (who hasn't been playing much guitar lately).
Directed by NYU Film School grad Jessica Costa, and line produced by GrindEthos Artist Services' Meghann Wright, the shooting is sharp, crisp and emotional. Visually, the colors especially stand out, in the street art, smoke bombs, and vibrant sets, from Washington Square Park to Brooklyn to a grocery store where the clerk rides the carts through the aisles until being shut down by her manager. Songwriter and artist Cassandra Kubinski, appears to be almost the "ringleader" in the vid, touching each of the characters' lives in some way before their turnaround.
Overall, the message of the song, to make up and follow your own rules rather than getting stuck in living by the rules you were handed by others, is a particularly good reminder and well demonstrated through the characters' stories, the anthemic rock-inflected melodies and production, and Cassandra's whimsical, theatrical performance.
Cassandra is a powerful vocalist, well known for her many piano-driven songs on the Lifetime hit TV show "Dance Moms" and her philanthropic/music combinations supporting causes such as Autism (see: "Not So Different", a collaboration with the Goo Goo Dolls and Mary Ramsey of 10,000 Maniacs in 2016). We've also got word that her latest initiative, #BreakYourBoundaries, is inspired by this song "You Never Told Me" and features events partnered with national non-profit Women in Music, and national instrument retailer Guitar Center.
