Truth: I have told someone that I loved them without meaning it.
Dare: I’d have to tell the person I didn’t mean it.

I think I love him. The flowers were so beautiful, even with the brown beginning to curl the edges of the rose petals and the supermarket price sticker still left on the wrapping. It’s these little things when I know he’s not here, he’s away for work, that make me feel as though he’s still standing next to me. Though I wish he were here, because I can’t even go to Lisa for company, as she’s away too. She’s been away often lately, too often, but if she can afford it, she’s the lucky one.

I will not go back. No. I am strong. I do not need him. Or her. I am on my own. I can do this. I can do this on my own. It’s only been twelve hours. They haven’t called. See, they don’t want you! They have each other. They can have each other. I don’t need them. I’ll be okay.

There are two kind of people in the world… those who seek, and those who know.

The After Relationship Longing
Hold out your hand
I’ll place mine
Next to your heartbeat
Watch as I reach inside
I’ll scratch my name
On your collarbone
On your ribs
Fingertips
I’ll leave my mark
You won’t forget
I did warn you
When I go
You’ll remember me
But I won’t remember you

If I could stop time, that ultimate superpower, I would press pause. Take my time reading all the books I want. Travel to all the places I want to see. Stock standard answers. But I have a secret. I already know how to stop time. When I brush your hair from your face and run my fingers across your lips and sigh your name against your skin while you whisper mine back. Side by side and face to face with hands clasped together or tracing circles down our spines. That’s when the world stops for me.

Summer
“Fuck, it’s hot.”
“It’s 40 degrees.”
“I can tell, my thongs are burning.” Sam lifts his foot up to demonstrate, and even though the concrete is hot enough to cook an egg, it hasn’t melted his shoes yet.
“Why can’t we go to the beach again?”
“Because I can’t be bothered driving.”
“It’s like a two minute walk!”
“Yeah, and are you going to be the one to drag all our shit in the heat down there with you and back again?” I gesture to the towels and beach chairs we’re currently occupying out on my parent’s deck, overlooking the pool and the vast blue beyond. It’s true the walk down to the sands wouldn’t take that long, but the path is completely open, meaning that not even my classy broad-brimmed hat is going to be enough to stop the accumulation of freckles.
“You’re way too logical to be fun.”
“It’s too hot for logic or fun. I’m just not stupid enough to want to go out into the heat.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”
There’s a beat of silence, and I close my eyes, waiting for him to break.
“Hey, Char?”
“Yeah?”
“I’ll drive.”
I can’t help the grin that I can feel spreading across my face as I bound off my chair and towards the car.
“Shotgun calls the music!” I call over my shoulder, and laugh at the grumbles that follow.

I never thought I’d need the air. It was more than life. It was freedom. It was the soul of the earth and the blessing of the gods. With my fingers and feathers stretched wide, I felt the wind kiss my skin softly as it rolled past. And when I took the step forwards and fell, that’s when I flew.
