what does it mean when someone calls a dog or a bitch "typey"?
“Typey” is typically used in conformation showing to describe a dog that if you were to just take its photo and make a silhouette of it, you’d immediately recognise it as that breed of dog. Dogs that “ooze breed type” I find are not extreme in one direction but have all the classic hallmarks of the breed. For example, a GSD who is lacking in breed type would be a square, level backed animal, or have very straight angulation. That dog may be 100% GSD, but it lacks type. KNPV Malinois I also find lack breed type - some I look at and can’t tell if they’re GSDs or Mals. A dog with breed type should have no question as to what breed it is.
Some use this to argue against a natural earred dog of a breed that is traditionally cropped, but a natural Doberman for example can still be a typey dog with the correct proportions, head planes, and expression. It’s a complicated description when speaking about breed structure, for sure, and it can be dependent on whom you’re speaking with.
