Plot: Hercules and his group of mercenaries are hired to save a kingdom in a realistic take on the legend? What?
Review: Imagine if in a 1000 years someone made a movie called Superman about Clark Kent saving a city by convincing everyone that he is in fact an alien or Three Amigos. That's the idea behind Hercules, it's Three Amigos with Muscles. It's giving a realistic backstory to a mythical legend and not even in a smart way. Oh the hydra? That was just three guys with snake-skin heads. Centaurs? Guys on horses, you were just seeing things wrong. Cerberus? It was just three wolves? Really? Just three wolves? You don't want to think that out for more than five minutes? No, alright let's move on. The whole idea is that Hercules just runs with this legend even if no one in the film believes him, defeating the point of running with the legend. I mean why do this? It plays no part in the plot except to throw in some narration about how anyone can be a hero if they try hard enough. WHAT?!? I'm watching fucking hercules, not batman. If the only way to make him relatable is by just turning him into another human, USE ANOTHER CHARACTER! Also they make Hercules into a mercenary for the first part of the movie to make sense but then make him a hero for the second part. I mean he just decides he's been a hero the whole time even if he spend the first hour violently killing people.
Okay let me put my Rock goggles on. If you've been reading this tumblr for any amount of time, you know I love the Rock. So I have the tendency to ignore a lot of dumb things that happen in his movies and I am gonna do the exact same thing here! Thanks to the Rock (and a bit to John Hurt riding his role straight into camp!) the movie is a lot of fun. Sure you have to ignore a lot of stuff including forgetting what orphans and nephews mean and getting behind a plot twist so dumb that it points out how little it makes sense. The Rock puts his all into the film and it makes you enjoy it. His charm and wit save the film. Every time the rock is on film, it has a fun and energy that just isn't there when he's not. That's not to say it's good even by The Rock standards (and to be fair he has movies that are good even great by not The Rock standards) but it is a fun popcorn film.
So basically unless you are a die hard fan of the Rock like me you should probably skip this one.
Trivia: The Rock was actually chained in with metal during his prison scene and pulled on the chains so hard he blacked out. I mean how can you not love this man!
