From the jewellery box of Helene Cathrine Büchler of Linderud Manor, Oslo

This was her wedding present when she married Mogens Larsen Monsen in 1762. It consists of a wooden box with silver boxes for hair pins, pomades etc, and a silver mirror. Inside two jewellery sets; one with rock crystals in Regènce style, the other with opalized glass in a lighter, floral Rococo style. In addition monogrammed rings, shoe buckles, a fan and various chains.

The jewellery box remained in the family at Linderud for almost 250 years, until it was eventually bought by Kunstindustrimuseet/Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo in 1994. You can see more detailed photos of the whole set here:

Portrait of a French couple, 1770s:

Louis Claude le Normand de Bretteville, 1770s ( X )

His harp, probably made by Nadermann Père ca. 1770 (OK-13381)

His wife, Catherine-Thérèse Vedastine le Normand de Bretteville (née von den Driesch), 1770-80 (NG.M.01985)

The couple married in 1773. He was a captain in the French army, and was counter-revolutionary, fighting the new new regime from England. His wife and children moved to Denmark, where he re-joined them in 1794. He continued to live in Denmark most of his life, but was allowed to return to France in 1816, and was granted the honorary title of marechal-de-champ by king Louis 16.

His family continued to live in Denmark and later Norway, and later brances also ended up in Ireland and Argentina (!), where relatives still live. A grandson became the prime minister in Norway in 1858.

Bretteville’s harp and portrait came to The National Museum in Oslo from different parts of the family, and was reunited at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo. Marquis Bretteville can be seen playing a minuet by Fischer, if the portrait is to be trusted - the notebook is left open on a table next to him. That particular minuet was later made famous by Mozart, who made 12 variations of it.

Madame Bretteville wears a miniature portrait attached to a black ribbon on her left arm. It’s not unlikely it’s a miniature of her husband, in fashionable powdered wig and blue Habit à la Française, similar to the portrait with the harp. Other than that, her hooded garment, either a Robe à la Française or a pet-en-l’air similar to this 1770s one from Textilmuseet, is closed in front over a buttoned compère. She displays just the elegance and comfort popular in the second half of the 18th century.
