Book 2 of Jackrabbit Brujo is FINALLY OUT!!!!

But, you may know, I'm fairly sick right now, so I'll leave that for future Bre to deal with.

Please enjoy this book of mine, it took a lot of blood sweat and tears to put together and it contains a lot of deeply personal stuff wrapped in a magical realism mystery adventure set in Tucson, AZ.

Rocky Mountain High - Resident Evil fic - Chapter 1

The door echoed inwards. Any echoes that swung outwards were swallowed by the isolation of the deep Rockies. Jill stood at the threshold, her back straight despite the weight she had carried up into the mountains. The helicopter would only take them so far, and despite BSAA’s clearance there was something dangerous about relaying the possibility of an old abandoned facility that she did not trust the pilot with.

Rebecca had co-piloted, of course, but only as a formality. None of them had the proper training or experience in mountainous terrain—especially not in the depths of Wyoming where the nearest locus of population were lone ranches and not towns. Were there no trees, Jill imagined they could gaze out to the flat lands swathed with green and gold for miles from this elevation. But they were in deep. So deep that the day seemed darker, if not from the thick branches then from the rocky cliffs blocking the light.

Carlos pressed his ear to the wall to dampen the rackety hum of the generator. The basement was small thanks to three cells taking up most of the space. Each cell had barred doors between concrete walls, probably to try and ensure containment with or without electricity. Each cell also had deep gashes on every reachable surface, some browned with old blood. Still Carlos rested his head against the wall regardless of the grim display of his future.

He was hot, head to toe. His head was woozy. And he was locked inside.

Jill shifted on the shoddy mattress. It had been Rebecca that had ushered them all off to rest after the long hike into nowhere, even though they had yet to find the generator and deal with the bloodstain on the floor.

In some ways they had dealt with it, if dealing with it meant finding the half-shorn rug and pulling it over the worst of the stain. Carlos had nearly choked on the dust. Claire then took up scouting the cabin for any signs of anything, and only found three bedrooms at the back. There was no evidence of running water, and the collapsed shed in the back must’ve been an outhouse.

Carlos had joked (Offered? Joked? What was the difference with him?) that he and Jill only needed the one room, and for a moment Jill didn’t have enough to stand on to defer that statement elsewhere. She had said, though, later when he was standing in the room with her, that they weren’t on vacation. His smile didn’t waver but his brow furrowed, and he told her with that sort of ‘caught joking’ tone, “I know that, Jill. C’mon.”

big update:

jackrabbit and the beast has been sent off for its first printing

yeah. i know. it's all done. i just have to wait for the books to arrive, in time for the holidays.

i'll have more information on how to preorder. because i'm going through a small local publisher + wide (yet independent) distribution, the books won't just show up at your local bookstore but you'll be able to ask your bookstore to order some for you. this goes for many places around the world, too, which is why i went with this decision. the book is being printed through ingramspark's printers.

if you're in the US you'll be able to preorder from the small publisher/bookstore i'm contracted with, but I also highly encourage you to support any local bookstore of yours to order through there once the books are out. you should also have the option to ask your library to grab some copies.

if you can't tell, i'm very, very, very tired. i crashed hard yesterday and I think it's just big "oh my god that's all finally done" crashing. it's surreal, i'm, i don't know what to feel, i'm jittery, my heart pounded holding the proof for the first time after asking for it over the counter of a bookstore I've spent time writing the book in.

if you can't wait for the physical copy, you can grab a digital one here for cheaper with most of the price going directly towards me. a physical copy will still support me quite well due to the nature of working with a local publisher, don't worry. I personally really like the physical book, too, the pages are nice and pulpy and should age really fantastically (that is to say, visibly wear their age; i really wanted to go for that feeling.)

as for the second book? ...2 or 3 chapters until the first draft is done. it's slow going but...it's going.

HAPPY 1 YEAR JACKRABBIT BRUJO!!!

That's right! One year ago I released my book! It's been a whirlwind and immensely surreal, but here's what's going on since that time frame:

Physical editions are in the works, and should be out by early next year-ish! I'm fortunate enough to go through a local brick and mortar bookshop/publisher

Relatedly, though it'd be a year from now I'm working on setting up an author event at said bookshop/publisher

Book! 2! The first draft is almost finished at 50k/estimated 65k words! Will be available digitally first before physically

Despite these advancements, I'm still an extremely independent author/publisher, the book is written/edited/cover illustrated all by me. Though wrapped in a magical realism murder mystery, Jackrabbit Brujo is a deeply personal exploration of mixed culture and grief set in Tucson, Arizona through the lens of its mixed Mexican-American protagonist Vel and Hmong-American Shoua.

You can read some reviews on Barnes and Noble, but the best way to support me is through my Ko-Fi Shop! I am currently still part-time so any support is really welcome ;-;

Notes: In lieu of sharing more snippets I just want to say that I'm very happy that I was able to write this fic. Some things I think I could've spruced up a bit, but in a lot of ways this fic took a Lot out of me emotionally and while it somehow became a part of a (long) recovery I'm happy to lay it to rest as-is. It'll be alright. It will.
