BREXNOTE to be Dispensed
So this is the finalized design of the Brexnotes which are about to be dispensed. Before I decided on the final, I did some test-prints and the typography construction of the note.
Democratic Cash
So at this stage of the project, I have designed two types of Banknote to be used to vote for the EU referendum. The elements I used to generate the design are based on the theme of each vote. I colored them with pencils and did a lot of test prints to test its similar presence to the real banknote. A banknote design usually consist numerous variety of colors that are subliminal to our naked eye. So I attempted these elements to
In the IN Brexnote you may notice these elements:
The knot border pattern represents a meaning of a “together is stronger”, which refers to the understanding that the choice of remain will make the country stronger by staying united with the EU .The border pattern of knots was also derived from David Cameron’s supportive arguments for the UK to remain as a member of the EU.
The serial number is disguised as the date of the referendum.
The geographic map of EU and UK in the frame on both sides of the note refers to the unity of Land and the visual territory of the current EU. It also represents the free movement of UK and EU citizens.
Repetitive pattern of the word IN in the background.
The Omron Pattern Replica behind the value of the note.
The UK and EU flag on the other side of the note where the audience can write their reason to their vote.
The Warm Color Scheme on the note design represents tolerance, conservative values, and comfort.
The Gold Color Foil Printed word “ IN” as the Hologram print effect.
In the EXIT Brexnote you may notice these elements:
The Micro pattern of Stairs (you might need to see it closely) as the border of the note design. This is to define that if Brexit happens, the UK will make a huge step to sovereignty and full independence.
The Subliminal UK Flag in the center of the note that represents national independence.
The Cool Color Scheme on the note design represents responsibility, strength, and prominence.
The Silver Foil Printed word “ EXIT” as the Hologram print effect.
The rest are pretty much the banknote features with democratic messages.
The next thing is to create and design the circulation and voting system; the idea of Voting ATM.
Designing my own “Brexnote” for the Voters. (WIP)
I figured that this project is not just about designing stickers. It is to engage the voters and target audience in a more interesting way of voting and giving a say about the reality of politics by using the idea of currency and banknotes. Politics and economy are at most related in political arguments and I see banknote as an expressive way of communication that people can see and use. After using the real banknotes to give messages around the country, it is clear that it is a quite risky way of circulation. So I thought of designing my own interpretation of Brexnote with the theme of the issue; EU referendum.
In the meantime, I have tried to design a raw piece of Brexnote for “IN” by applying the common design elements of a banknote, such as political portrait (David Cameron, who is subject to Britain remaining as a member of the EU), hologram print, Omron Patterns, Currency, Serial Number (as the date of the referendum), the geographic illustration of the land of Europe and Great Britain and also the colour scheme used on banknote design. I thought the warm colours are suitable for Bremainers because they symbolise comfort and certainty. I coloured the note with pencils before using the digital colours to decide the suitable colour scheme. At the back of the note, I designed it in a way that people can write their reason of their vote. The next Brexnote to design is the OUT Brexnote. (To do NEXT)
Surely these are all not as valuable or as established as a real type of banknote but if the fabrication of the banknote and its purpose is quite real, people will likely to take the design of the project seriously. In terms of the circulation of my own designs of the Brexnotes, I am planning to design a man-operated ATM for Brexnote. This ATM will operate as the voting tool to people around the country. Sticking the Brexnote Stickers onto the note.
This one is for the Bremainer (Make Self at Home; I promise to give the bearer lifetime visa to Europe) refers to Free Movement of UK and EU citizens
The Brexnote Sticker Set for both Bremainers and Brexiters to use to spread their voices on the EU referendum. This will be used on a real transaction as an experiment to circulate the message through currency. (TO DO NEXT)
