David Bowen Sets Himself Apart from Other Candidates in Debate
MTEA endorsed candidate David Bowen debated Bria Grant, Sara Johann, and Tia Torhorst in the first debate of the district 10 campaign for State Assembly and painted some clear distinctions between himself and the other candidates Tuesday night in Shorewood.
On school vouchers Bowen was very quick to say he was against them, while Sara Johann and Bria Grant both said they were supporters of the program that strips away valuable resources from public schools. Tia Torhorst also said she was against vouchers, but since she has received the maximum campaign donation from voucher supporters such as her former boss Chris Abele it is very difficult to believe. Abele has also given $500 checks to voucher candidate Dan Adams who is running against Marina Dimitrijevic in the 14th district Assembly race.
Bowen also distanced himself from the other candidates on the issue of whether or not public lands and facilities should be sold to private individuals or groups. He expressed great concern over doing this while Grant, Torhorst, and Johann all stated they would review each situation on a case by case basis. MTEA members know that groups like St. Marcus are attempting to purchase Milwaukee Public Schools facilities, but they can know that David Bowen will make the right choice.
Be sure to check out David Bowen's campaign page to see where he stands on other important educator issues and don't forget to vote in the August 12th primary. Also consider absentee voting.
