Back Bone | Bria Jhane

I know there is lots to discuss with today’s #NewMusicFriday’s releases, but you’ll have to wait until the Music Monday podcast for that. I meant to cover this song earlier this week as it was released last Friday, but it slipped my mind. It’s funny because I was wondering a few weeks ago what happened to young Bria. For those unaware, she was discovered on the VH1 show, “Signed” by The-Dream who then signed her to his RadioKilla record label. Her vocals were something serious and with Dream’s track record, it was no surprise that he scooped her up…her vocals and his writing ability should make for greatness. This is the second song I’ve heard from Bria but the first one was immediately after the finale aired and at this point that was over a year ago, so I wasn’t sure if there would be more coming. It’s good to hear this song and that she’s staying true to the sound she entered the reality show competition with. I really am look forward to hearing more and a whole body of work from her.

Editor’s note: This post had previously included a “pick” for The-Dream’s show at Lincoln Hall. We’ve since become aware more of the information surrounding his arrests for domestic violence and assault and regret ever giving him a critical platform, even as small as this, to begin with. Our original intent was to re-raise awareness of his arrests and criticize him. Looking back, doing that under the context of a "pick" was ignorant and lazy, and giving him a platform at all, especially in which we still gave positive critical analysis to his music, was extremely irresponsible. We vow to do better. 

Julia Holter & Jessica Moss, Thalia Hall

This time, she’s performing songs! After the debut of her collaborative installation at the Art Institute of Pitchforks Midwinter earlier this month, avant-pop artist Julia Holter returns to play Thalia Hall. Her most recent album, last year’s wildly experimental and expansive Aviary, was divisive but unabashedly brilliant. And really, what else can we expect from Holter these days? 2015′s Have You in My Wilderness was stylistically varied but still somehow managed to retain a pop bend; Aviary circumvents expectations by often forgoing familiar arrangements and instruments for something without boundaries.

Opening for Holter is Jessica Moss, who earlier this week we interviewed about her most recent album Entanglement. Tonight, she’ll likely play “Particles” and half of the “Fractals” songs, though the feel of the performance varies night by night. “ Every night, it’s affected by who is there, the room, the amps I’m borrowing, the promoters that are there, the conversations I’ve had. It all feeds into that evening’s performance,” Moss told us.
