Nationals' offseason summary to date: Waiver moves

The Astros claimed utility man Brian Bixler off of waivers from the Nats in early November. Bixler, originally drafted by the Pirates in the second round of the ’04 draft, was purchased from Pittsburgh by Washington in August of ’10. In 79 games last season, Bixler had a forgettable .205 batting average, .267 OBP, and a .265 slugging percentage. Bixler is 29.

Cole Kimball and the Nationals have had an interesting offseason—on November 16, Toronto selected Kimball off waivers from the Nats, and two days later the same thing happened in reverse. The 2006 12th-round draft pick and 2011 September call up had an incredible month with the Nats last year, earning a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings (12 appearances). Despite a somewhat high WHIP (1.357), Kimball showed a lot of promise last September.

The Nats also claimed third baseman Carlos Rivero off of waivers from Philadelphia. The 23-year-old has compiled a .258 batting average and a .317 OBP in 6 seasons in Philly’s minor league system. Last year, in his first career stint in Triple-A, he hit just .185, although it was only in 7 games.

Mets Beat Nationals, 7-4

Jeff Frazier (.412) was 1-2 with a 3-run homer (2) and 3 RBI (6), and Brian Bixler (.375) was 2-3 with a solo homer (2) and an RBI (7). Nationals (10-11) Starter Jason Marquis (L, 1-1, 4.02) went 3.2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks; showing more of his early 2010 performance than his August and September pitching. Chris Capuano (W, 1-0, 1.69) dominated in 5.2 shutout innings for the Mets (11-11) in which he gave up only 3 hits and struck out 5. New York reliever Oliver Perez (8.38), who the Mets are reportedly going to release, gave up 2 runs while only getting 2 outs. And speaking of terrible performances by relievers, the Nationals' Tyler Clippard (15.19!), who dominated in the bullpen last season, gave up a run on a hit and a walk in one third of an inning. Nationals Beat Mets, 4-3

Michael Morse (3, BA .400), Jerry Hairston, Jr. (1, BA ,235), and Brian Bixler (1, BA .545) all hit solo homers to bring the Nationals' record up to 6-3 and return to FIRST PLACE in the Grapefruit League. Starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann (ERA 0.00) gave up one hit, two walks, and struck out 4 in 3 strong innings. Despite racking up 12 hits and 4 walks, the Nationals only scored 4 runs, but it was enough to beat the New York Metropolitans for the second time this Spring Training. Bryce Harper (BA .308) did not enter the game. For the Mets, former National Willie Harris (BA .211) walked and doubled--both off of Zimmermann. Braves Beat Nationals, 5-0

The Nationals managed only 3 baserunners (singles by Laynce Nix and Brian Bixler and a walk to Michael Aubrey) while being blanked by the Braves. Starter Ross Detwiler was dominant for the Nats, allowing an unearned run (there were errors in the game by Nix and error machine Ian Desmond) in 3 innings and striking out 5. 9 different Braves recorded one hit each in the game Sunday as the Nats fell to 4-3.
