If you had to choose a favourite part of New York City to photograph, which one would you pick and why? Financial District is always my go to place to shoot. There’s a good mix of old and new architecture. I also love how ominous a lot the business men look with their trench coats and top hats. It gives the image more personality.
You mentioned you grew up in Upstate NY; has this contributed to your photography style in any way? If so, how? I’ve never thought about that but maybe it has. When I moved to the city I didn’t really know of street photographers or even take the time to look at what people were doing. So I ended up winging everything I found interesting so in a sense I think it contributed a little bit.
How have your experiences been with brand commissions? What advice can you give to photographers on Tumblr looking to go in this direction? Overall I’ve had good experiences, I think anybody that has worked with brands can say some just don’t want to pay you reasonably for you work. As long as you speak up for yourself, you can come to an agreement in most cases. You need to learn what your work is actually worth, you never want to undersell yourself but you never want to think your stuff is worth a fortune because they’ll just find someone else. I’ve also had big plans with a company and then it just not happen. It sucks but there’s always another opportunity somewhere else. In most instances, I’ve been emailed about potential partnership, commissions, licensing deals, etc so it’s made me realize if your work stands out someone somewhere is probably looking. Another thing you can do is just simply ask about potential partnerships or asking if they’re looking for photos to be taken. Most times you probably won’t get an email, but don’t let that deter you. The worst anybody can say is no, or just nothing at all.
